Chapter 12 - The Golden Boy Stumbles

Preston's lawyer made a fatal mistake.

He put Preston on the stand to testify in his own defense.

He thought Preston's natural charisma would sway the jury.

But Preston wasn't used to being questioned by someone who didn't worship him.

The prosecutor, Sarah, stepped up to the podium.

"Mr. Vance, you claim you were aiming for the table, not the child."

"Yes, that's correct."

"I was angry, I swung blindly."

Sarah played the video again.

She paused it at the exact moment Preston swung the board.

"Look at your eyes in this frame, Mr. Vance."

"You aren't looking at the table."

"You are looking directly at your eight-year-old niece."

Preston stammered.

"It was a split-second thing."

"You can't prove my intent."

Sarah smiled coldly.

"I don't have to."

"The jury can see it for themselves."

"You didn't show remorse."

"You didn't call for help."

"You stood over her bleeding body and called her a thief."

Preston lost his temper again.

"She ruined my wedding!"

He shouted it into the microphone.

The entire courtroom gasped.

Preston realized what he had just done.

He had shown the jury his true face.
