Chapter 8 - Gabriel Alvarez

Gabriel Alvarez was not a celebrity.

He preferred staying invisible.

He owned consulting firms.

Property companies.

Security contractors.

Businesses that appeared briefly, collected money and disappeared.

Elena’s foundation had paid three of those companies.

Nearly eleven million dollars vanished through them.

Vanessa had always described Gabriel as an estranged brother she rarely saw.

The emails proved they communicated constantly.

Maya laid dozens of messages across Roberto’s conference table.

“They were stealing from the foundation.”

“Herrera helped conceal the vehicle tampering.”

“But we still need to connect Gabriel directly to the crash.”

Roberto pointed at the email.

“He said make sure she can’t talk.”

“It’s powerful.”

“It may not be enough by itself.”

Detective Hale entered carrying another file.

“I found the retired captain who shut down Elena’s investigation.”

Roberto turned.

“Where?”

“Florida.”

“He admitted Gabriel paid his gambling debts.”

The retired captain had already agreed to speak with prosecutors.

The case was reopening.

For the first time, Vanessa’s media campaign began to collapse.

News outlets learned that the housekeeper’s allegations were supported by recordings.

The sedative appeared in Sofía’s blood test.

The forged guardianship petition became public.

Vanessa stopped giving interviews.

Then she changed strategies.

She contacted Roberto directly.

“I want to see Sofía.”

“No.”

“I am her stepmother.”

“You are under investigation.”

“I have not been charged.”

“You frightened her.”

“She loves me.”

Roberto almost laughed.

“No, Vanessa.”

“She survived you.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa said.

“You think María loves her?”

“She does.”

“Ask María why Elena planned to fire her.”

Roberto frowned.

“What?”

“You don’t know everything about your saintly housekeeper.”

Vanessa ended the call.

Roberto immediately found María.

“Did Elena plan to fire you?”

María’s face changed.

“Yes.”

The answer shocked him.

“Why?”

“Because I lied to her.”

Roberto waited.

María sat down.

“My husband was sick.”

“He had no insurance.”

“I borrowed money from one of Elena’s household accounts.”

Roberto stared at her.

“How much?”

“Six thousand dollars.”

“I planned to repay it.”

“Elena discovered it.”

“She was angry.”

“She had every right.”

“Then what happened?”

“She told me I had one week to decide whether to resign or confess everything and repay it.”

“Did Vanessa know?”

“Yes.”

“She saw us arguing.”

Roberto understood immediately.

Vanessa had found María’s weakness.

“She blackmailed you.”

María nodded.

“She told me if I ever accused her of mistreating Sofía, she would tell you I had stolen from Elena.”

“Why didn’t you tell me yourself?”

“Because Elena died three days later.”

María’s eyes filled.

“And suddenly admitting I had taken money from her made me look like someone who might have wanted her gone.”

Roberto sat across from her.

“Did you repay it?”

“Every dollar.”

She opened a drawer.

“I kept the receipts.”

Roberto looked at the evidence.

Vanessa had not merely hidden her own crimes.

She had spent years collecting everyone else’s mistakes.

Turning shame into silence.

That evening, Maya called with another development.

“Gabriel Alvarez just returned to the United States.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

“But he landed on a private flight in New Jersey.”

Roberto looked toward Sofía playing piano in the next room.

Gabriel had come back just as investigators were closing in.

That was not confidence.

May you like

That was desperation.
