Chapter 7 - Vanessa Goes to War

By noon, Roberto’s name was everywhere.
Vanessa sat in a television studio wearing cream silk and carefully controlled sadness.
She told America she had spent years protecting Sofía from an emotionally absent father.
She claimed Roberto controlled everyone in the mansion through money.
She claimed María had manipulated the child.
Then she cried.
It was perfect.
Roberto watched from his office.
Maya turned off the screen.
“Do not respond emotionally.”
“She drugged my daughter.”
“I know.”
“She covered up Elena’s murder.”
“We have one deceased witness making that claim.”
“He recorded a confession.”
“A confession that still needs authentication.”
Roberto hated the law in that moment.
Truth felt obvious inside the mansion.
Outside it, truth required evidence.
Vanessa’s lawyer released selected financial records showing Roberto had moved money from Sofía’s trust.
Maya examined them.
“These are real transfers.”
Roberto stared at her.
“What?”
“They were educational expenses.”
“Therapy.”
“Medical specialists.”
“Security.”
“Everything permitted.”
“But Vanessa removed the descriptions.”
To the public, it looked like Roberto had been spending his blind daughter’s inheritance.
Sponsors began calling.
Board members became nervous.
Then a family court petition arrived.
Vanessa requested temporary guardianship of Sofía.
Roberto laughed in disbelief.
“She’s my wife.”
“Not Sofía’s legal mother.”
Maya nodded.
“But she’s claiming emergency circumstances.”
“She says you are unstable and retaliating because she exposed financial misconduct.”
Roberto stared at the petition.
“She hit María.”
“She terrified Sofía.”
“We prove it.”
Maya pointed at him.
“We prove it calmly.”
That afternoon, Sofía underwent a forensic interview with a child psychologist.
Roberto was not allowed in the room.
He understood why.
It still felt unbearable.
Sofía talked for almost an hour.
She described punishments.
The missing cane.
The sedatives.
Vanessa moving furniture and then laughing when she bumped into things.
She described being told that Daddy loved his company more than her.
Then the psychologist asked whether Vanessa had ever spoken about Elena.
Sofía went quiet.
Finally she whispered.
“She said Mommy caused trouble too.”
“What kind of trouble?”
“I don’t know.”
“She said Daddy likes women who make trouble.”
The psychologist asked one final question.
“Did Vanessa ever tell you what happened to your mother?”
Sofía hugged her rabbit.
“She said Mommy should have stopped asking questions.”
Behind the observation glass, Roberto went numb.
Maya wrote the sentence down.
Vanessa had said essentially the same thing on the nursery recording.
Two independent statements.
One from a seven-year-old.
One captured accidentally.
The pattern was becoming impossible to dismiss.
Then Mateo entered.
“We found something on Mrs. Alvarez’s laptop backup.”
“What?”
“Emails between Vanessa and her brother Gabriel.”
“How old?”
“Four years.”
Roberto stood.
“Before Elena died?”
Mateo nodded.
“One email was sent forty-eight hours before the crash.”
Roberto opened it.
Vanessa had written only one sentence.
Elena refuses to stay quiet.
Gabriel’s response came two minutes later.
May you like
Then we make sure she can’t talk.
