Chapter 17 - Sofía’s Voice
The defense did exactly what Roberto feared.
They questioned Sofía’s memory.
Her perception.
Her nightmares.
Her blindness.
They argued that a child who could not visually identify Vanessa might confuse voices, scents and sounds.
Then prosecutors played the recordings.
Vanessa’s voice filled the courtroom.
“Stop crying.”
“She is the obstacle between me and everything I deserve.”
No visual identification was necessary.
Vanessa had identified herself.
Dr. Keller testified about the sedatives.
Mateo testified about disabled cameras.
María testified about the punishments.
The forensic psychologist explained that Sofía consistently described the same events without coaching.
Then Vanessa’s attorney tried to destroy María.
“You stole from Elena Morales.”
“Yes.”
“You lied about it.”
“Yes.”
“So you are a thief and a liar.”
María looked directly at him.
“I was both.”
The attorney paused.
María continued.
“I also repaid every dollar.”
“I admitted what I did.”
“And Elena forgave me.”
“Your client knew that.”
“She still used my shame to keep me silent while she frightened a child.”
The courtroom went quiet.
Vanessa stared at María with hatred.
Then prosecutors played Elena’s video.
Trust María.
She made a mistake.
But she told me the truth.
The defense had no answer.
Sofía did not testify live.
Her recorded forensic interview was admitted under strict protections.
Roberto watched from the back of the courtroom.
The psychologist asked Sofía why she had been afraid to tell her father.
Sofía answered.
“Vanessa said blind people get things wrong.”
Then she added.
“But I knew her footsteps.”
The prosecutor asked.
“How?”
“Vanessa walks like she is angry at the floor.”
A few people in the courtroom almost smiled.
Then Sofía’s voice became small.
“She said Daddy wouldn’t believe me.”
“Did he?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The night he came home five minutes early.”
Roberto lowered his head.
That sentence became the center of the entire case.
Five minutes exposed months of abuse.
Five minutes reopened a murder investigation.
Five minutes changed a family.
Vanessa eventually entered a guilty plea to several charges rather than face a full child-endangerment trial.
But she refused to plead guilty to involvement in Elena’s death.
Gabriel went to trial.
The evidence against him was enormous.
Payments.
Emails.
Herrera’s recording.
Elena’s files.
The fake passport prepared for Sofía.
The accomplice testimony.
Then prosecutors revealed their final witness.
Vanessa.
She had agreed to testify against her brother in exchange for consideration at sentencing.
Gabriel laughed when she entered the courtroom.
“You always betray everyone.”
Vanessa sat down.
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“I just finally chose the person I should have chosen before.”
Gabriel frowned.
“Who?”
Vanessa looked toward Roberto.
Then toward an empty chair reserved for Sofía, who was not present.
“The child.”
For the first time, Vanessa publicly admitted the truth.
Gabriel had ordered Elena’s brakes tampered with.
Vanessa knew.
And after the crash, she helped cover it up.
The courtroom went completely silent.
The case was finally no longer a mystery.
