Chapter 1 - Five Minutes Early

Vanessa’s hand was still raised when Roberto stepped through the doorway.

“Finish what you were about to do.”

His voice was quiet.

So quiet that Vanessa froze before she even turned around.

María’s eyes opened.

Sofía lowered her hands from her ears.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Vanessa slowly faced him.

“Roberto.”

The color drained from her face.

“You’re home early.”

Roberto glanced at the grandfather clock beside the staircase.

8:55 p.m.

Five minutes.

That was all.

Five minutes had separated what he had believed about his home from what had actually been happening inside it.

Vanessa immediately lowered her arm.

“You misunderstood.”

Roberto placed the chocolate mousse on a nearby table.

“Then explain it.”

Vanessa forced a laugh.

“Sofía knocked over my wine.”

“I didn’t mean to,” Sofía whispered.

Roberto looked toward his daughter.

She was gripping her stuffed rabbit so tightly that its fabric ears were twisted between her fingers.

María remained on her knees in front of her.

Roberto’s stomach tightened.

“What were you going to do?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Nothing.”

Roberto looked at María.

“María.”

The housekeeper hesitated.

Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.

“Be very careful.”

That sentence changed Roberto’s expression completely.

“You will not threaten anyone in my house.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I am your wife.”

“And she is my daughter.”

“I have never hurt her.”

Sofía flinched.

It was tiny.

Almost invisible.

But Roberto saw it.

He walked toward her and crouched several feet away.

“Sofía.”

His voice softened.

“It’s Daddy.”

“I know.”

“Can I come closer?”

She nodded.

He crossed the remaining distance.

Her hands immediately found his sleeve.

“You came early.”

“I did.”

Sofía leaned toward him.

Then she whispered something so quietly that Roberto almost did not hear it.

“Please don’t leave again tonight.”

His heart seemed to stop.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

“She’s emotional.”

Roberto turned.

“No.”

“She’s terrified.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You’re being manipulated.”

“By my seven-year-old daughter?”

“By María.”

María finally stood.

“No, sir.”

Her voice shook.

“I should have told you sooner.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“María.”

Roberto held up one hand.

“Let her speak.”

María looked at Sofía.

Then at Roberto.

“This was not the first time.”

The room became completely silent.

Roberto stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

María swallowed.

“She waits until you leave.”

Vanessa laughed.

“This is insane.”

“She takes Sofía’s cane away when she thinks the child is being difficult.”

Roberto slowly looked toward the white mobility cane leaning against the far wall.

Too far away for Sofía to reach.

María continued.

“She makes her stand alone in rooms after moving the furniture.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You lying—”

“Stop.”

Roberto’s voice cracked through the room.

Vanessa stopped.

Sofía suddenly spoke.

“She says I need to learn.”

Roberto turned back toward her.

“Learn what, sweetheart?”

Sofía’s lower lip trembled.

“How helpless people feel when nobody comes.”

Roberto felt something inside him break.

He looked at Vanessa.

She was no longer pretending to smile.

“You’re leaving this house tonight.”

Her eyes widened.

“You cannot throw me out because of a frightened child’s imagination.”

Roberto rose.

“I watched you raise your hand.”

“I wasn’t going to hit her.”

“No.”

María said it firmly now.

“You were going to hit me.”

Vanessa turned.

“And why would I do that?”

“Because I moved between you and Sofía.”

Roberto’s phone was already in his hand.

“Mateo.”

His head of security answered immediately.

“Sir?”

“Come to the living room.”

“Bring two officers.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re calling security on your wife?”

Roberto looked at Sofía.

“No.”

“I’m protecting my daughter from a woman I should never have brought into her life.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

Then she smiled.

It was not frightened.

It was cold.

“You should think carefully before humiliating me, Roberto.”

“Why?”

“Because there are things about this family you still don’t know.”

Roberto stared at her.

Vanessa picked up her purse.

Then she leaned close enough that only he and María could hear.

“You think tonight is the first time Sofía almost lost everything?”

Roberto’s blood went cold.

Vanessa walked toward the hallway.

Sofía suddenly lifted her head.

She sniffed the air.

Then her face changed.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“That smell.”

“What smell?”

Sofía pointed toward Vanessa.

“The perfume.”

Roberto looked at his daughter.

She was trembling again.

“I smelled it before.”

“When?”

Sofía whispered the answer.

“In Mommy’s car.”

May you like

The night of the crash.
