Chapter 11 - The Night Sofía Nearly Died

Sofía had spent eleven days in intensive care after the crash.
Roberto remembered almost none of it clearly.
He had suffered broken ribs and a concussion after racing to the hospital and collapsing in the emergency department.
His brother Tomas handled family logistics.
Doctors saved Sofía.
That was the story Roberto had carried for three years.
Now hospital records revealed a hidden battle.
At 2:16 a.m., someone electronically requested cancellation of an urgent procedure designed to reduce swelling around Sofía’s optic nerves.
The hospital physician rejected the request because it contradicted medical advice.
The procedure proceeded.
Sofía survived.
Her sight could not be saved.
But her life was.
“Who had access to my credentials?”
Roberto asked.
Maya examined the logs.
“Your executive office.”
“Your family administrator.”
“And your emergency household account.”
The household account had been managed by an outside contractor.
Alvarez Strategic Consulting.
Roberto stared at the screen.
Vanessa.
Again.
Detective Hale contacted the hospital’s former systems administrator.
The login had come from an internet address associated with a hotel.
Security footage from that hotel still existed in archived insurance files because of an unrelated lawsuit.
At 2:09 a.m., Vanessa entered the business center.
At 2:21 a.m., she left.
Roberto watched the footage twice.
There was no dramatic confession.
No weapon.
Just a woman walking into a hotel office wearing a dark coat.
A woman who would later marry him.
Maya spoke softly.
“She may claim she was doing something unrelated.”
“She tried to stop my daughter’s treatment.”
“We still need to prove she submitted the request.”
Roberto looked at her.
“We will.”
Vanessa’s attorney learned about the footage that afternoon.
Suddenly, Vanessa wanted a deal.
She offered information about Gabriel in exchange for reduced charges.
The prosecutor refused to discuss terms without specifics.
Vanessa gave them one.
A storage facility in Newark.
Police entered at 6:40 p.m.
Inside they found accounting records.
Fake identification.
Cash.
And one bloodstained shirt preserved inside plastic.
Testing connected it to Luis Herrera.
The dead mechanic.
Gabriel’s fingerprints were on the bag.
Vanessa had just implicated her own brother in another possible crime.
But the most important discovery sat inside a locked cabinet.
Elena’s missing phone.
Three years after the crash.
Roberto held it inside an evidence bag.
The screen was destroyed.
The case was cracked.
But it was hers.
The device contained deleted text fragments recovered by forensic technicians.
One conversation was between Elena and Vanessa.
Elena had written.
I know where the foundation money went.
Vanessa replied.
You are making a mistake.
Elena answered.
No.
You did.
Then came Vanessa’s final message.
Think about Sofía before you decide how brave you want to be.
Roberto read it once.
Then again.
The message had been sent six hours before Elena died.
Vanessa had threatened his daughter before the crash.
May you like
And Roberto had later invited that woman into Sofía’s bedroom.
