Chapter 15 - Elena’s Last Investigation
Gabriel was trying to create chaos.
But sometimes lies worked best when they contained a piece of truth.
Elena had been investigating Whitmore Global.
Roberto found the proof inside her private files.
She had discovered that Gabriel’s shell companies were not the only fraudulent vendors.
Two senior Whitmore executives had approved the payments.
One was Roberto’s longtime chief financial officer, Martin Cross.
The other was his cousin, Anthony Morales.
Both men still worked for the company.
Roberto called an emergency board meeting.
Martin denied everything.
Anthony became defensive.
“You’re trusting the files of a dead woman over your own family?”
Roberto stared at him.
“Yes.”
Anthony’s face changed.
That was enough.
Forensic accountants began examining ten years of transactions.
The numbers were staggering.
Gabriel had stolen eleven million.
Martin and Anthony had diverted another twenty-three million through unrelated schemes.
Elena discovered all of it.
She planned to force an internal audit.
Her death buried the investigation.
Roberto unknowingly continued employing the men she suspected.
“I built an empire full of people stealing from me.”
Charles Whitmore, Roberto’s uncle and chairman, answered quietly.
“No.”
“You built something large enough that people believed you could not see every corner.”
The words echoed strangely.
Roberto thought of Sofía.
Her blindness had never prevented her from understanding the world.
His own certainty had.
Martin tried to flee that evening.
Federal agents arrested him at the airport.
Anthony resigned.
Then turned himself in after his lawyer contacted prosecutors.
Both men denied involvement in Elena’s death.
Financial evidence suggested they knew Gabriel was stealing.
But no proof showed they knew about the brake tampering.
Gabriel’s conspiracy remained separate.
Vanessa finally agreed to cooperate.
Her first interview lasted seven hours.
She admitted helping Gabriel conceal fraud.
She admitted paying Luis Herrera.
She admitted forging the guardianship paperwork.
She admitted replacing Sofía’s medicine.
Then investigators asked the central question.
“Did you know Gabriel intended to damage Elena’s vehicle?”
Vanessa looked at the table.
“Yes.”
Roberto watched through one-way glass.
His breathing stopped.
“Did you know Elena could die?”
“No.”
“Did you attempt to cancel Sofía’s hospital treatment?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Gabriel said if Sofía woke up and remembered me, everything was over.”
Roberto had to leave the room.
Maya found him in the hallway.
He was shaking.
“She was seven.”
“She was four then.”
Roberto corrected her automatically.
That somehow made it worse.
Vanessa had tried to interfere with a four-year-old child’s medical care to protect herself.
Roberto pressed both hands against the wall.
“I married her.”
Maya waited.
“She sat at Sofía’s birthday table.”
“She tucked her into bed.”
“She knew.”
Maya finally spoke.
“And now everyone else knows too.”
Inside the interrogation room, Vanessa offered one final revelation.
“There is evidence Gabriel never found.”
“What evidence?”
“Elena made a copy of everything.”
“Where?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“But she told me one thing.”
“If anything happened to her, Sofía would eventually lead Roberto to it.”
Roberto stared through the glass.
His daughter.
Again.
Elena had left something for Sofía.
