Chapter 7 - The Night Henry Collapsed
Henry Caldwell’s stroke had happened during a private dinner at the mansion.
Only four people were present.
Henry.
Margaret.
Lauren.
Charles Bennett.
According to the original report, Henry suddenly became dizzy after dessert.
An ambulance arrived eighteen minutes later.
By then, Henry could barely speak.
Detective Ruiz requested the emergency medical records.
He also interviewed the staff who had worked that evening.
Rosa remembered the dinner clearly.
Henry and Lauren had been arguing in the study before the meal.
She heard Henry say, “You stole from people who trusted us.”
Lauren answered, “You have no idea what you’re destroying.”
Rosa did not hear the rest.
Later, Bennett poured Henry a drink.
Henry collapsed less than an hour afterward.
There was no proof that anyone caused the stroke.
Ruiz refused to make accusations without evidence.
But the timing could not be ignored.
Emma studied Henry’s financial files from the apartment.
She noticed a series of payments to a private medical consulting company.
The company had no employees listed online.
Its registered address was a mailbox.
The payments began one month before Henry’s stroke.
The payer was Greenbridge Consulting.
Emma called Ruiz immediately.
Within hours, investigators identified the owner.
Dr. Nathan Cole.
Cole had previously worked as a private physician for several wealthy families.
He had lost his medical license after improperly prescribing controlled medications.
Ruiz requested a warrant for his financial records.
Daniel visited his father again.
Henry remembered very little about the night he collapsed.
But one detail remained clear.
“Drink.”
Henry whispered.
Daniel leaned closer.
“What about the drink?”
“Bitter.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Who gave it to you?”
Henry tried to answer.
His mouth moved.
Nothing came out.
Then his eyes shifted toward the door.
Margaret was standing there.
Daniel rose.
His mother looked exhausted.
For the first time in his life, she seemed old.
“Leave us alone, Daniel.”
He remained where he was.
Margaret looked at Henry.
“Please.”
Henry slowly nodded.
Daniel stepped outside but left the door slightly open.
He hated himself for listening.
Margaret sat beside her husband.
“I thought I was protecting Lauren.”
Henry’s eyes hardened.
Margaret began crying.
“I knew she had moved some money.”
Henry looked away.
“I thought she was covering investment losses.”
Margaret continued.
“She told me if the board discovered it, the foundation would collapse.”
Henry’s hand trembled.
“So I helped her disable cameras.”
Margaret covered her face.
“I believed she only wanted to frighten Emma.”
Henry’s eyes snapped toward her.
Margaret’s voice broke.
“I swear I didn’t know she would push her.”
Outside the room, Daniel closed his eyes.
His mother had finally admitted it.
She had helped create the opportunity.
Maybe she had not expected violence.
But she had chosen Lauren over Emma before anything happened.
Daniel entered the room.
Margaret turned.
She knew from his expression that he had heard everything.
“Daniel.”
He looked at his mother.
“You’re going to tell Detective Ruiz exactly what you just told Dad.”
Margaret stood.
“You don’t understand what that will do to this family.”
