Chapter 16 - Emma’s Decision

The prosecutor invited Emma to give her opinion about the plea agreement.

The final decision was not hers.

But as the assault victim, her voice mattered.

Emma sat in a conference room with Ruiz and Assistant District Attorney Claire Morgan.

The proposed agreement required Lauren to plead guilty to aggravated assault, fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, and charges connected to Henry’s poisoning.

She would also testify against Bennett.

The sentence would be substantial.

Emma listened carefully.

Then she asked.

“Would she have to admit what she did to me?”

Claire nodded.

“In open court.”

“No language about an accident?”

“No.”

“No claim that I attacked her first?”

“No.”

Emma looked at Ruiz.

He understood the question behind her questions.

For months, Lauren had tried to rewrite reality.

Emma did not need revenge.

She needed the truth placed somewhere Lauren could not erase it.

“I can accept the plea.”

The agreement moved forward.

Bennett refused every offer.

He believed his connections would protect him.

They did not.

Cole testified.

Peter testified.

Caroline testified.

Rosa testified.

Margaret testified.

Even Daniel testified.

Bennett’s own recordings became the strongest evidence against him.

His trial lasted three weeks.

The jury deliberated less than six hours.

Guilty on every major count.

When the verdict was read, Bennett showed almost no emotion.

Margaret cried quietly.

Henry watched from home.

Emma did not attend.

She was nine months pregnant.

Her doctor had forbidden unnecessary stress.

Three days later, Lauren appeared for her plea hearing.

Emma chose to watch remotely.

Lauren stood before the judge.

No green dress.

No diamonds.

No carefully staged tears.

The judge asked whether she pushed Emma Caldwell down the staircase.

Lauren paused.

Her attorney whispered something.

Lauren looked toward the courtroom camera.

For one brief moment, Emma felt as though Lauren was staring directly at her.

Then Lauren answered.

“Yes.”

The judge asked whether Emma had attacked her first.

Lauren’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

“Did you later falsely claim she attacked you?”

“Yes.”

“Did you participate in disabling security cameras before the confrontation?”

“Yes.”

“Did you participate in fraudulent transfers from the Caldwell Family Foundation?”

“Yes.”

“Did you participate in a conspiracy involving Henry Caldwell’s medication?”

Lauren closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Emma turned off the screen.

She did not need to hear anything else.

Daniel sat beside her.

“It’s over.”

Emma shook her head.

“The case is almost over.”

Daniel understood.

Legal consequences would not automatically repair their marriage.

They still had work ahead.

Hours later, Emma woke with a sharp tightening across her abdomen.

She checked the clock.

2:17 a.m.

Another contraction came seven minutes later.

Daniel woke.

“Emma?”

She looked at him.

“I think it’s time.”

His eyes widened.

“Time?”

Emma almost laughed despite the pain.

“Yes, Daniel.”

“Baby time.”

Daniel jumped out of bed so quickly that he nearly knocked over the lamp.

For the first time in months, Emma laughed.

Twenty minutes later, they were driving toward the hospital.

Neither noticed the black sedan following them.
