Chapter 11 - Bennett’s Insurance Policy
Bennett had spent decades protecting wealthy people from scandal.
He understood one rule better than anyone.
Never trust the people whose secrets you protect.
The laptop recovered from the airport contained an encrypted folder.
Investigators broke through the password.
Inside were hundreds of recordings.
Phone calls.
Meetings.
Private conversations.
Bennett had secretly recorded Lauren for years.
His reason was simple.
Insurance.
If Lauren ever blamed him, he planned to destroy her.
One recording had been made three weeks before Henry’s stroke.
Lauren’s voice was unmistakable.
“He’s going to remove me from the foundation.”
Bennett responded.
“Then we move before he does.”
Lauren asked whether Cole’s medication would work.
Bennett said it would create a medical event that could look natural.
Emma stopped listening.
Daniel stared at the floor.
Ruiz continued the recording.
Lauren asked what would happen if Henry died.
Bennett answered.
“Death would complicate things.”
“Incapacity is cleaner.”
Daniel stood abruptly and walked toward the window.
Emma knew he was trying not to break down.
His sister had not merely stolen money.
She had participated in a plan to disable their father.
The next recording was made after Henry’s stroke.
Margaret entered Bennett’s office.
She was crying.
“Something is wrong.”
Bennett told her Henry’s condition was unfortunate but natural.
Margaret asked whether Lauren had anything to do with it.
Bennett said no.
That recording supported Margaret’s claim that she did not know.
Then another file played.
It was recorded the morning Emma fell.
Lauren’s voice.
“She found the Greenbridge statements.”
Bennett asked how much Emma knew.
“Enough.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I’ll scare her.”
Bennett answered sharply.
“Do not touch her.”
Lauren laughed.
“She’s pregnant, not made of glass.”
Emma felt Daniel’s hand tighten into a fist.
The recording continued.
Lauren said she had asked Margaret to disable the cameras because she wanted privacy during the confrontation.
Bennett told her again not to create a physical incident.
The file ended.
Ruiz looked at Emma.
“This establishes planning.”
Emma nodded.
“It also establishes that Margaret knew Lauren intended to confront me.”
“Yes.”
“But not necessarily that she knew Lauren intended violence.”
Emma looked away.
Margaret’s legal guilt would be decided elsewhere.
Emma’s personal judgment was simpler.
Margaret had known enough to stop it.
She chose not to.
The prosecutor added conspiracy charges against Lauren related to the foundation fraud and Henry’s poisoning.
Bennett faced similar charges.
Cole agreed to testify.
The story reached the press by noon.
Television trucks surrounded the Caldwell mansion.
Headlines spread across the country.

Emma turned off the television.
She did not feel victorious.
She felt tired.
Then her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Instead, she answered.
A man spoke quietly.
“Mrs. Caldwell?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Peter Shaw.”
Emma sat upright.
The fired accountant from Rosa’s notebook.
“I heard what happened.”
