Chapter 1 - The Call That Changed Everything
Emma’s fingers were shaking so badly that she almost dropped the phone.
The marble beneath her cheek felt freezing cold.
Every breath sent another sharp wave of pain through her side.
One hand remained pressed protectively against her pregnant belly.
Above her, Lauren Caldwell stood at the top of the staircase in her emerald-green dress.
Only seconds earlier, Lauren had shoved Emma with both hands.
Now she was clinging to Rosa, the family maid, pretending to tremble.
“She attacked me first.”
Lauren’s voice cracked perfectly.
“She came at me, and I was only defending myself.”
Rosa looked terrified.
Emma knew exactly why.
Rosa had worked for the Caldwell family for almost twelve years.
Her husband was unemployed.
Her youngest daughter needed college tuition.
Losing this job could destroy her family.
Lauren knew that too.
That was why she had grabbed Rosa before anyone else could speak.
Daniel Caldwell finally moved toward his wife.
“Emma.”
He rushed down the stairs and dropped beside her.
When he saw the pain in her face, his expression changed.
“Don’t move.”
Emma looked at him.
For three years, she had watched Daniel defend his family whenever they insulted her.
He called their comments misunderstandings.
He called Lauren difficult.
He called his mother old-fashioned.
Emma had accepted every excuse because she loved him.
But this was different.
This time, their unborn child had been placed in danger.
The front doors suddenly opened.
Two uniformed police officers entered first.
Detective Mateo Ruiz followed them.
He was a tall man in his forties with calm eyes and the kind of expression that made liars uncomfortable.
Behind the officers came two paramedics carrying medical equipment.
Lauren’s fake tears stopped instantly.
Daniel looked from Emma to Detective Ruiz.
“You already knew him?”
Emma closed her eyes for a moment.
“Yes.”
The entire room went silent.
Daniel stared at her.
Lauren’s face lost its color.
Detective Ruiz approached carefully.
“Mrs. Caldwell, don’t try to sit up.”
One paramedic began checking Emma’s blood pressure while the other examined her abdomen.
Detective Ruiz looked toward the staircase.
“Who pushed her?”
Lauren immediately pointed at Emma.
“She attacked me.”
Detective Ruiz did not react.
He simply reached into his jacket and removed a small notebook.
“Then you won’t mind giving a formal statement.”
Lauren swallowed.
Margaret Caldwell, Daniel’s mother, finally stepped forward.
“This is a private family matter.”
Detective Ruiz looked directly at her.
“A pregnant woman fell down a staircase after reporting an assault.”
His voice remained calm.
“That stopped being a private family matter the moment we received the call.”
Margaret stiffened.
Emma watched Lauren carefully.
The woman who had smiled moments earlier now seemed unable to stand still.
Then Detective Ruiz said something that made her completely freeze.
“And before anyone touches the security system, I should warn you that destroying potential evidence during an active investigation may create additional legal problems.”
Lauren slowly turned toward the camera mounted above the hallway.
Emma saw the fear in her eyes.
That was when Emma knew something important.
