Chapter 10 - The Doctor Who Knew Too Much
Dr. Nathan Cole owned a cabin in western Maryland.
Police found his car there.
The cabin was empty.
His phone sat on the kitchen table.
His passport remained in a drawer.
Nothing suggested he had planned a long trip.
Ruiz believed someone had warned him.
Bennett refused to speak.
Lauren demanded a separate attorney.
Margaret voluntarily went to the police station.
Her statement lasted four hours.
She admitted helping Lauren disable the cameras.
She admitted knowing about irregular foundation transfers.
She denied knowing anything about Henry’s medical condition being deliberately caused.
Ruiz believed parts of her story.
But belief was not enough.
They needed evidence.
Emma returned to Rosa’s notebook.
One entry caught her attention.
October 14.
DR. COLE CAME THROUGH KITCHEN.
MR. BENNETT SAID NO STAFF SHOULD SEE HIM.
October 14 was the night before Henry’s stroke.
Emma called Rosa.
“Do you remember why Dr. Cole was there?”
Rosa thought for a moment.
“He carried a small medical bag.”
“Did he meet Henry?”
“No.”
“Who did he meet?”
“Mr. Bennett.”
Then Rosa remembered something else.
Cole left through the garage.
But before leaving, he handed Bennett a small insulated pouch.
Emma called Ruiz.
Within hours, police searched the mansion garage.
Nothing remained there.
However, a camera from a neighboring property had captured Cole’s car arriving.
That placed him at the mansion.
Ruiz released Cole’s photograph to law enforcement agencies.
The next morning, a motel clerk in Pennsylvania called police.
Cole had checked in under a false name.
Officers surrounded the motel.
Cole surrendered without resistance.
During questioning, he initially denied everything.
Then Ruiz showed him the financial transfers.
Three hundred thousand dollars from Greenbridge Consulting.
Cole stopped talking.
His attorney arrived.
The interview ended.
Six hours later, Cole requested another meeting.
This time, he wanted a deal.
Ruiz called the prosecutor.
Cole’s statement changed the entire case.
Bennett had approached him months earlier.
He wanted medication that could increase Henry’s risk of a medical crisis while being difficult to identify later.
Cole claimed he supplied the drug but never administered it.
“Who did?”
Ruiz asked.
Cole looked at the table.
“I don’t know.”
Ruiz did not believe him.
Cole swallowed.
“I gave the pouch to Bennett.”
“Who was supposed to use it?”
Cole hesitated.
Then he whispered.
“Lauren.”
At the detention center, Lauren received the news from her attorney.
She immediately demanded to speak with prosecutors.
Her new story was different.
Bennett had forced her.
Bennett had manipulated her.
Bennett had controlled everything.
When Ruiz told Emma, she was not surprised.
“Lauren always finds someone else to blame.”
Ruiz nodded.
“But now everyone involved is blaming everyone else.”
“That usually helps.”
“It does.”
Ruiz closed the file.
“Especially when one of them has been recording the others.”
Emma looked at him.
“Who?”
