Chapter 3 - The Woman in the Hallway
The doctor finished the ultrasound and finally gave Emma the words she had been desperate to hear.
“The baby’s heartbeat is strong.”
Emma covered her face and cried.
For the first time since the fall, the tears were not from fear.
The doctor explained that Emma had severe bruising and would need observation overnight.
There were no immediate signs of placental separation.
However, stress and physical trauma meant they would monitor her closely.
Daniel sat beside the bed.
He looked broken.
Emma was too exhausted to comfort him.
Her phone rang.
Detective Ruiz.
Emma answered.
“What did you find?”
Ruiz did not waste time.
“The cloud backup recovered footage from the second-floor corridor approximately fifteen minutes before your fall.”
Emma waited.
“It shows Lauren entering the security room.”
Emma closed her eyes.
“There’s more.”
Ruiz continued.
“Your mother-in-law entered three minutes later.”
Daniel heard him.
He stood immediately.
“My mother?”
Ruiz paused.
“Yes.”
Daniel stared at Emma.
She looked equally shocked.
Margaret Caldwell had always treated Emma coldly.
But Emma had never believed she would help Lauren cover up physical violence.
Ruiz explained that the backup had captured Margaret leaving the security room while holding a handwritten note.
Lauren exited less than one minute afterward.
Twenty-five minutes later, Emma fell.
“We’re still recovering the staircase footage.”
Ruiz’s voice became more serious.
“But I need to ask you something.”
“What?”
“Why were you arguing with Lauren?”
Emma looked toward Daniel.
She had hoped never to have this conversation in a hospital room.
Three days earlier, Emma had gone into Daniel’s study looking for a property-tax document.
Instead, she found an envelope addressed to the Caldwell Family Foundation.
Inside were bank statements.
Millions of dollars had been moved from charitable accounts into shell companies.
Emma had recognized one company immediately.
Greenbridge Consulting.
Lauren owned it.
Emma had photographed every page.
Then she quietly contacted Detective Ruiz.
The investigation had started before the staircase incident.
Daniel listened in silence.
“You thought Lauren was stealing from the foundation?”
Emma shook her head.
“I didn’t think it.”
“I knew it.”
Daniel stood motionless.
The Caldwell Family Foundation had been created by Daniel’s late grandfather.
It funded hospitals, shelters, scholarships, and food programs.
Daniel had served on the board since he was twenty-five.
If money had been stolen, his signature might have appeared on documents without his knowledge.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Emma looked at him.
“Because the last time I told you your sister was lying, you asked me to keep peace in the family.”
Daniel lowered his head.
He had no answer.
Ruiz continued.
“Emma confronted Lauren this afternoon.”
“Yes.”
“What did you say?”
“I told her I knew about Greenbridge.”
“And how did she respond?”
“She told me I had no idea how powerful this family was.”
Emma paused.
“Then she said people like me disappear from wealthy families every day, and nobody asks questions.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
Emma remembered Lauren standing beside the staircase.
The anger in her eyes.
The sudden movement.
The force of both hands against Emma’s shoulders.
“She pushed me after I told her I had already copied the records.”
Ruiz was silent for several seconds.
Then he said quietly.
“This may be bigger than an assault case.”
A knock came at the hospital door.
Daniel opened it.
Rosa stood outside.
Her eyes were red.
She held an old black notebook against her chest.
“I need to talk to Mrs. Emma.”
Daniel stepped aside.
Rosa entered and closed the door.
Then she placed the notebook on Emma’s bed.
“I kept records.”
Emma stared at it.
“Records of what?”
