Chapter 6 — The Betrayal Inside the Family

The words echoed through the ballroom.
"The betrayal came from inside our own bloodline."
Emily felt the world shift beneath her feet.
She had spent the last hour discovering that the man she loved had lied to her.
That he had manipulated her.
That he had tried to take everything her father built.
She thought she had reached the end of the nightmare.
But Nathan’s expression told her something worse was waiting.
Someone else.
Someone from their own family.
Emily slowly turned.
"Who?"
Nobody moved.
The guests avoided eye contact.
They suddenly looked like people standing in the middle of a storm, hoping nobody noticed them.
Nathan looked toward the far side of the ballroom.
Emily followed his gaze.
And then she saw him.
A man standing near the tall windows.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
Someone who had been there all evening.
Someone who had watched Emily kneel.
Someone who had never defended her.
Her uncle.
Richard Hartwell.
Her father's younger brother.
Emily's face changed.
"No."
Richard slowly stepped forward.
Unlike Preston, he didn't look frightened.
He looked disappointed.
As if Emily was the one who had caused trouble.
"Emily."
His voice was gentle.
Almost fatherly.
And somehow, that made it worse.
She remembered that voice.
Richard had been part of her childhood.
He had attended every birthday.
He had hugged her after her mother died.
He had stood beside Daniel Hartwell at company events.
He was family.
"What does he have to do with this?" Emily asked.
Nathan looked at Richard.
"Everything."
The room became silent.
Richard sighed.
"Nathan, you were always too emotional."
Emily stared.
"Uncle Richard..."
He looked at her.
"I know this is difficult."
"Difficult?"
Her voice trembled.
"I just found out my husband tried to destroy my life."
Richard remained calm.
"And now you are willing to believe another accusation without proof?"
Nathan stepped forward.
"We have proof."
Richard smiled slightly.
"Do you?"
The confidence in his voice bothered Emily.
Because it sounded familiar.
It sounded like Preston.
The same arrogance.
The same belief that money could protect him.
Catherine Reynolds opened another file.
"Mr. Richard Hartwell."
Richard looked at her.
"Yes?"
"Would you like me to explain why your offshore accounts were connected to Preston Whitmore's private transactions?"
The room exploded with whispers.
Emily looked at her uncle.
"What?"
Richard's expression finally changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Nathan noticed.
"I knew it."
Richard looked at him.
"You always thought you were smarter than everyone."
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"No."
He looked at Emily.
"I just believed Dad."
Emily swallowed.
"What did Dad say?"
Nathan took a deep breath.
"He told me never to underestimate the people who smile the most."
Those words hurt.
Because Emily understood.
The people who hurt her most tonight weren't strangers.
They were people she trusted.
Richard walked closer.
"Daniel was always paranoid."
Emily shook her head.
"No."
She looked at him.
"My father was careful."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
That was the first time Emily saw it.
The mask slipping.
The kind uncle disappearing.
The businessman appearing.
"Your father made mistakes."
Emily stared.
"My father built everything."
Richard smiled coldly.
"And then he gave it all to you."
A strange silence followed.
Emily understood.
This wasn't just about money.
It was about resentment.
Richard had spent his entire life believing he deserved what Daniel created.
And when Daniel chose Emily...
Richard couldn't accept it.
"You were angry because Dad trusted me," Emily said.
Richard laughed softly.
"Trusted you?"
He looked around.
"He spoiled you."
The words cut.
"He built an empire and handed it to someone who never had to earn it."
Nathan's expression hardened.
"Be careful."
Richard ignored him.
"You think you understand business because you attended meetings?"
He looked at Emily.
"You were a daughter."
A pause.
"I was his brother."
Emily felt something inside her break.
Because suddenly she saw the truth.
Richard didn't hate her.
He hated what she represented.
The fact that Daniel chose love over tradition.
The fact that he chose his daughter over his brother.
"My father knew," Emily whispered.
Richard looked at her.
"Knew what?"
"That you felt this way."
Silence.
Nathan answered.
"Yes."
Emily looked at him.
"That's why he changed everything."
Nathan nodded.
"Six months before he died, Dad discovered Richard had been secretly working with Preston."
Emily closed her eyes.
Everything connected.
The hidden accounts.
The missing documents.
The manipulation.
It wasn't just Preston.
Preston had someone helping him.
Someone with access.
Someone inside the family.
Richard looked at Nathan.
"You were supposed to disappear."
The room froze.
Emily turned.
"What did you say?"
Richard immediately realized his mistake.
Nathan smiled sadly.
"There it is."
Richard recovered quickly.
"I meant you were supposed to stop interfering."
"No."
Nathan shook his head.
"You meant exactly what you said."
Emily looked at her uncle.
"You knew what happened to Nathan."
Richard said nothing.
That was enough.
Emily stepped back.
The man who used to bring her gifts on Christmas.
The man who told her she reminded him of her mother.
Had known her brother was in danger.
And said nothing.
"Why?" Emily whispered.
Richard looked at her.
"Because your father was destroying everything."
Emily stared.
"You mean because he wouldn't give you what you wanted."
Richard's expression hardened.
"You have no idea what your father did."
Nathan stepped forward.
"Actually, she does."
He reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
"Dad left this for Emily."
Richard's face changed.
"What is that?"
Nathan looked at him.
"The truth."
Emily took the envelope.
Her name was written on it.
Her father's handwriting.
Again.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
Only one page.
The first sentence made her heart stop.
"Emily, if Richard is standing in front of you, then I failed to protect you longer than I hoped."
She looked at her uncle.
Richard looked away.
Her father knew.
He knew everything.
Emily continued reading.
"Your uncle believes betrayal is justified because he believes he was denied what was his."
A pause.
"But what he never understood is that the greatest danger to a family is not greed itself."
Emily's eyes moved to the next line.
And then she froze.
Because her father's final warning was not about Richard.
Not about Preston.
Not even about money.
It was about Emily's own child.
"Protect my grandchild. Because someone will try to use your baby as the final piece of their plan."
Emily's hand moved instinctively to her stomach.
Fear rushed through her.
Nathan saw her reaction.
"What did he write?"
Emily looked up.
Her face was pale.
"My baby."
The entire room went quiet.
Richard's expression changed.
Preston, being escorted away by police, suddenly stopped.
And for the first time...
Both men looked afraid.
Because Daniel Hartwell had predicted everything.
Even the final move.
Emily looked at Nathan.
"What does this mean?"
Nathan stared at the letter.
"It means Dad knew they would lose the company."
A pause.
"And when they lost the money..."
His voice lowered.
"They would go after the only thing left."
Emily whispered:
"My child."
Outside the ballroom, thunder rolled across the sky.
And somewhere in the darkness...
A phone rang.
A person answered.
"They know."
A pause.
May you like
Then a cold voice replied:
"Then we move to the final plan."
