Chapter 4 — The Brother Who Vanished

The word "No" still hung in the air.
Not a suggestion.
Not a warning.
A reaction.
A fearful reaction.
And Emily Whitmore had spent years learning one thing about Preston:
He was never afraid unless there was something to hide.
The ballroom remained frozen.
The wealthy guests who had once watched her kneel now watched her stand.
The woman they underestimated was asking the one question Preston never wanted to answer.
"Why are you afraid of my brother?"
Preston opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
For a man who always had an answer, the silence was unusual.
Emily noticed every detail.
The way his hand tightened.
The way his eyes moved toward Vanessa.
The way Vanessa suddenly avoided looking at him.
They were communicating without words.
And Emily finally understood.
They had done this before.
They had hidden things before.
"Tell me," Emily said.
Her voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
"What happened to Nathan?"
Preston forced a laugh.
"You are letting these people manipulate you."
Emily looked at Catherine.
Then back at him.
"Are they?"
She lifted the photograph.
"Because this looks like my brother investigating you."
Preston's expression darkened.
"You don't know what that picture means."
"Then explain it."
Again.
Silence.
The silence of a guilty man.
Emily looked around the room.
At the executives.
At the investors.
At the people who had celebrated Preston's success.
She wondered how many of them knew.
How many people had watched her father’s company slowly change hands.
How many people had benefited while she remained unaware.
Then Catherine stepped forward.
"Mr. Whitmore, perhaps we should move this conversation somewhere private."
Preston immediately looked at her.
"You don't have authority here."
Catherine calmly smiled.
"Actually, I do."
She reached into her briefcase and removed another document.
"The Hartwell estate owns forty-eight percent of Whitmore International."
The room erupted with whispers.
Preston's face changed.
"No."
Emily turned.
Forty-eight percent.
Her father's shares.
The shares Preston had spent years controlling.
The shares he believed were his.
Catherine continued.
"Upon Mr. Hartwell's death, those shares were placed into a protective trust."
She handed the document to Emily.
"Your husband was granted temporary management rights."
Emily looked at Preston.
"Temporary?"
Preston said nothing.
"How temporary?"
Catherine answered.
"Until Mrs. Emily Whitmore requested a review."
Emily frowned.
"I never requested one."
The attorney looked directly at Preston.
"That is because your husband prevented you from knowing it existed."
The room went silent again.
Emily felt something break inside her.
Not her heart.
Something else.
An illusion.
The illusion that her marriage had problems because they both made mistakes.
The truth was worse.
Preston had built a cage around her.
And convinced her it was a home.
"You isolated me," Emily whispered.
Preston stepped forward.
"Emily—"
"You controlled my access to the company."
"No."
"You handled every financial decision."
"I was protecting you."
She looked at him.
"Protecting me?"
Her voice cracked.
"Or protecting yourself?"
The question landed.
Because everyone in the room knew the answer.
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"Enough."
Everyone looked at her.
She adjusted her dress.
"This is becoming ridiculous."
Emily looked at her.
"You seem nervous."
Vanessa smiled.
"I'm not."
"Then why did you know about my father's trust?"
A pause.
A tiny pause.
But Emily saw it.
And she knew.
Vanessa knew more than she should.
"You told her," Emily said to Preston.
He didn't respond.
"You told her about my family."
Still nothing.
"You planned this together."
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Be careful."
Emily almost smiled.
That was the same phrase Preston used.
The same intimidation.
The same strategy.
They weren't just working together.
They were the same.
Catherine interrupted.
"There is one more thing."
Emily looked at her.
"Your father left a recorded statement."
Preston immediately turned.
"A recording?"
Catherine nodded.
"He wanted Emily to hear his words after she discovered the truth."
Emily's heart tightened.
Her father's voice.
After all these months...
She could hear him again.
"Where is it?"
David Collins removed a small device from his briefcase.
"The recording is encrypted."
He looked at Preston.
"Only one person can activate it."
Emily understood.
"Me."
She stepped forward.
David handed it to her.
Her fingers trembled as she touched the device.
Then she pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A voice.
A voice she had not heard since the day she lost him.
"Emily."
Her knees almost weakened.
Her father's voice.
Older.
Tired.
But still strong.
"If you are hearing this, then my fears were correct."
Emily closed her eyes.
A tear fell.
"I wanted to believe I was wrong about Preston. I wanted to believe he loved you for you."
A pause.
"But a father's instinct is difficult to ignore."
Everyone listened.
Even Preston.
Especially Preston.
"Three months before my death, I discovered something disturbing."
The recording continued.
"Preston was not trying to build my company."
A pause.
"He was trying to replace me."
A murmur moved through the ballroom.
Emily looked at Preston.
His face was pale.
"My investigation uncovered financial transfers, hidden partnerships, and agreements that would have allowed Preston to take complete control of Whitmore International."
Daniel Hartwell's voice became quieter.
"But that was not the worst discovery."
Emily held her breath.
"The worst discovery was that someone inside my own family was helping him."
Emily froze.
Someone inside the family.
Nathan?
The room seemed to shrink.
Her father's voice continued.
"I searched for the person responsible."
A pause.
"And I found the evidence."
Emily's hand covered her mouth.
"What evidence?"
The recording suddenly changed.
A different voice appeared.
A man's voice.
A voice Emily recognized.
Nathan.
Her brother.
"Preston, you don't understand. If Emily finds out, everything falls apart."
Emily froze.
The ballroom disappeared.
Her father’s recording continued.
"The conversation you are hearing was recovered from a hidden recording device."
Nathan's voice continued.
"I can't let you hurt her."
Preston's voice responded.
"She won't know anything. She trusts me."
Emily felt cold.
Because she knew that voice.
She had slept beside that voice.
Loved that voice.
Trusted that voice.
Then Nathan said something that changed everything.
"You're underestimating Emily."
A pause.
"And you're underestimating me."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Emily stood completely still.
Because one thing was now clear.
Nathan wasn't helping Preston.
He was fighting him.
But another question remained.
If Nathan was protecting her...
Why did he disappear?
And why was someone sending messages from his phone?
Then suddenly—
The ballroom doors opened.
A man stood there.
Everyone turned.
Emily's heart stopped.
Because after eight months of believing he was gone...
Her brother was standing alive.
But he wasn't alone.
Behind him were two police officers.
And Nathan's first words were not a greeting.
Not an apology.
Not an explanation.
They were a warning.
"Emily..."
His eyes moved toward Preston.
"Get away from him."
The entire ballroom froze.
Preston stepped backward.
Because he knew.
The game was over.
But Emily still didn't know the most shocking truth.
Nathan had not disappeared because he was hiding.
He disappeared because someone tried to kill him.
May you like
And the person who ordered it...
Was standing inside that ballroom.
