Chapter 13 — The Choice That Broke a Family

The message remained on the screen.

"Ask your father why he chose Emily over me."

Nobody spoke.

The words were simple.

But they carried the weight of decades of pain.

Emily looked at Daniel.

Her father.

The man who had spent his entire life protecting her.

The man she had just discovered was alive.

The man she wanted to forgive.

But now...

There was something else.

Something Isabella believed.

Something that had shaped her entire life.

"Dad."

Emily's voice was barely above a whisper.

"Is it true?"

Daniel looked at her.

He didn't answer immediately.

And Emily felt the same fear she had felt all night.

The fear of another hidden truth.

Another secret.

Another person deciding she wasn't strong enough to know.

"Tell me."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he nodded.

"Yes."

The room went silent.

Emily felt her heart sink.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at the screen.

"It means Isabella was right about one thing."

A pause.

"I made a choice."

Emily stared.

"What choice?"

Claire stepped forward.

"Daniel..."

He shook his head gently.

"No."

His voice was tired.

"She deserves the truth."

Everyone watched as Daniel walked toward the center of the ballroom.

For the first time, the powerful man who controlled companies and negotiations looked like a father standing before his daughter.

A father preparing to admit his greatest mistake.

"When you and Isabella were born, there were complications."

Emily listened.

"Your mother was unconscious for several hours after delivery."

Claire lowered her eyes.

Daniel continued.

"Both babies were healthy."

Emily froze.

"Both?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

The room became still.

"Isabella was born first."

A pause.

"Then you."

Emily looked down.

Her entire life had been built around a story that wasn't complete.

"Then what happened?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Someone attempted to take Isabella from the hospital."

Emily covered her mouth.

"Who?"

"We never knew for certain."

Richard looked away.

Daniel noticed.

But continued.

"Security failed. Records disappeared. Nurses were threatened."

Claire whispered:

"And then we received the news."

Emily looked at her.

"What news?"

Claire's eyes filled.

"They told us Isabella had died."

Emily felt pain in her chest.

"They lied."

"Yes."

Daniel nodded.

"They lied."

He looked toward Richard.

"And years later, we discovered someone inside our circle helped cover it up."

Everyone understood.

Richard.

But Daniel continued.

"By the time we discovered Isabella was alive, she was already living with another family."

Emily whispered:

"Why didn't you bring her home?"

The question was simple.

But it carried years of sadness.

Daniel looked devastated.

"Because she didn't want to come."

Emily froze.

"What?"

Nathan stepped forward.

"Emily..."

Daniel continued.

"Isabella believed we abandoned her."

Emily shook her head.

"Because someone told her that."

"Yes."

A pause.

"But she believed it."

Daniel looked at the floor.

"She was a child who grew up thinking her parents chose another daughter."

Emily felt tears forming.

"Me."

Daniel looked at her.

"No."

His voice became firm.

"Never you."

"But that's what she believes."

"Because I made a mistake."

The room became silent.

Emily stared.

"What mistake?"

Daniel looked at her.

"When Isabella was found, I had a choice."

A pause.

"Your mother was recovering. The company was under attack. The people who took Isabella were still unknown."

He looked at Claire.

"And you were a newborn baby."

Emily listened carefully.

"I chose to keep you protected while we searched for Isabella."

Emily's eyes widened.

"Because I was the baby you still had."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

A painful silence followed.

"And Isabella saw that as choosing you over her."

Emily looked away.

Because suddenly she understood.

Not the truth.

But the pain.

A child had lost everything.

And in her mind...

Emily became the symbol of what she lost.

Then Isabella's voice came through the speakers.

The security system had activated.

Everyone turned.

Her voice echoed through the room.

"Do you hear that, Emily?"

Emily froze.

"Isabella?"

The voice continued.

"Your father says he didn't choose you."

A pause.

"But he did."

The speakers crackled.

"He built an empire for you."

Emily felt tears forming.

"Isabella..."

"You had everything."

Her voice broke slightly.

"A family. A name. A future."

A pause.

"I had nothing."

Emily closed her eyes.

Because behind the anger...

She heard pain.

Deep pain.

"I didn't know."

Silence.

Then Isabella answered.

"No."

Her voice softened.

"You didn't."

Emily opened her eyes.

"Then don't punish me for something I never did."

Nobody spoke.

Even Daniel looked surprised.

Because Emily wasn't defending herself.

She was reaching for her sister.

Isabella's voice became quiet.

"You sound like Mom."

Emily's heart stopped.

"Why?"

"Because she was the only person who believed I deserved the truth."

Emily looked at Claire.

Her mother began crying.

"Isabella..."

A long silence.

Then Isabella spoke again.

"I didn't come for the money."

Daniel looked up.

Everyone listened.

"I came for the evidence."

Emily frowned.

"What evidence?"

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

A document signed decades ago.

Daniel looked shocked.

"No."

Nathan stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Daniel stared.

"The original inheritance agreement."

Catherine examined the document.

Then her face changed.

"What?"

Emily looked at her.

"What does it say?"

Catherine slowly answered:

"It says the Hartwell legacy was never meant to pass to one heir."

Everyone froze.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because he knew what came next.

"The inheritance belongs to both daughters."

Emily stared.

"Both?"

Catherine nodded.

"Emily and Isabella."

A silence followed.

Then Isabella spoke.

"Exactly."

Emily looked toward the screen.

"So why reveal yourself now?"

A long pause.

Then Isabella answered:

"Because someone is trying to kill us."

Everyone froze.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who?"

The answer came immediately.

"The person who started this entire war."

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A man.

Older.

Powerful.

Someone Emily recognized.

Someone who had been missing from every investigation.

Someone who had been pulling strings from the shadows.

Isabella whispered the name:

"Thomas Bennett."

Emily's face changed.

Daniel looked horrified.

Because Thomas wasn't just his friend.

He was the person who knew every secret.

Every weakness.

Every hidden account.

And now he was coming for the final piece of the Hartwell legacy.

The child Emily carried.

The final heir.

Then Isabella said the words that changed everything:

"Thomas didn't just betray our family."

A pause.

"He killed the person who tried to stop him."

Emily whispered:

"Who?"

The answer came.

"Your father."

Everyone looked at Daniel.

Confusion filled the room.

Because Daniel was standing alive.

And yet...

Isabella continued:

"The man standing there isn't the only secret."

The lights flickered.

The security system failed.

And a final message appeared:

"THE REAL DANIEL HARTWELL DIED EIGHT MONTHS AGO."

Emily stared at the screen.

Her blood ran cold.

She slowly turned toward her father.

"Dad..."

Daniel looked at her.

May you like

And for the first time all night...

He looked afraid.
