Chapter 3 — The Secret Behind the Photograph

The photograph slipped slightly between Emily’s fingers.

For several seconds, she couldn’t move.

She couldn’t speak.

The entire ballroom watched her face change.

They saw confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then something much deeper.

Pain.

Because the person standing beside Preston in the photograph was not a stranger.

It was someone Emily had trusted.

Someone who had sat at her dinner table.

Someone who had held her hand during the darkest moments of her life.

Someone who had looked her in the eyes and promised:

"I would never let anyone hurt you."

Her older brother.

Nathan Hartwell.

Emily’s breath caught.

"No..."

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Preston noticed the reaction.

For the first time, he looked genuinely frightened.

"Emily—"

She turned toward him sharply.

"Why is my brother in this picture?"

Nobody spoke.

Even Vanessa looked confused.

Because whatever was happening was bigger than anyone expected.

Catherine Reynolds carefully watched Emily.

"Your father wanted you to know the entire truth."

Emily looked back down at the photograph.

The image was dated two years earlier.

Nathan stood beside Preston outside a private financial building.

They weren't smiling.

They weren't shaking hands.

They looked serious.

Like they were discussing something important.

Something secret.

But that wasn't the worst part.

In Nathan's hand was a folder.

A folder with the Hartwell company logo.

Emily knew that logo.

Her father had used it on every important document.

She looked at Catherine.

"My brother knew?"

The attorney hesitated.

"Yes."

The answer felt like a physical blow.

Emily stepped back.

Nathan had always been the person she admired.

After their mother died, he became the protective figure in her life.

When Emily was twenty-two and struggling to find herself, Nathan was the one who told her:

"Never let powerful people convince you that you are less valuable."

But now...

Why was he standing with Preston?

Why was he hiding things from her?

"Where is Nathan now?" Emily asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence scared her.

"Where is my brother?"

Catherine lowered her eyes.

"Mrs. Whitmore..."

Emily's voice became sharper.

"Where is he?"

The attorney finally spoke.

"Your brother disappeared eight months ago."

The room went completely silent.

Emily felt the baby move.

A strange combination of fear and confusion rushed through her.

Eight months.

The exact same time everything in her marriage started falling apart.

The exact same time Preston became distant.

The exact same time her father’s warnings started making sense.

"You told me Nathan was traveling," Emily whispered.

She looked at Preston.

"You told me he needed space."

Preston didn't answer.

Emily stared at him.

"You lied to me."

"Emily—"

"No."

Her voice stopped him.

"You don't get to explain anymore."

The woman standing before him was no longer the woman who begged him to communicate.

She was the woman who finally understood.

Preston looked around the room.

He realized the guests were no longer on his side.

They weren't looking at Emily as a powerless wife.

They were looking at him.

A man exposed.

A man losing control.

"You are making a mistake," Preston said.

Emily almost laughed.

A sad, broken laugh.

"That is the sentence you always use when someone discovers the truth."

Preston's face hardened.

"You have no idea what happened."

"Then tell me."

Silence.

"Tell me why my father investigated you."

Silence.

"Tell me why my brother disappeared."

Silence.

"Tell me why you were meeting behind my back."

Silence.

Every unanswered question became another piece of evidence.

Emily looked away.

She didn't need him to confess.

Not anymore.

Because the truth was already standing in front of her.

Catherine placed another document on the table.

"Mr. Hartwell also left instructions regarding Nathan."

Emily looked at her.

"What instructions?"

The attorney opened the document.

"Your father believed Nathan was not working against you."

Emily froze.

"What?"

Everyone turned.

Catherine continued.

"He believed Nathan discovered something about Preston and attempted to protect you."

A wave of confusion crossed Emily's face.

"Then why was he with Preston?"

David Collins answered.

"Because your brother was investigating him."

Emily stared at the photograph again.

The folder in Nathan's hand suddenly looked different.

Not like evidence of betrayal.

Like evidence of a secret investigation.

"He was trying to find proof," Emily whispered.

Catherine nodded.

"Yes."

A tear finally escaped Emily's eye.

Not because she was weak.

Because she realized how much she had missed.

While she was trying to save her marriage...

Her brother was trying to save her life.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

Catherine looked down.

"Because he believed you were being watched."

Emily's heart stopped.

"Watched?"

The attorney opened the final section of the file.

"There were concerns that someone inside the company had access to private communications."

Emily suddenly remembered.

The strange messages.

The deleted emails.

The times Preston somehow knew conversations she had only shared privately.

She looked around the ballroom.

Every person who had watched her humiliation now seemed like a stranger.

How long had this been happening?

How long had Preston been controlling her life?

Then her phone vibrated again.

Everyone looked.

Emily glanced down.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

"Emily, do not trust the attorneys. Your father never told you the whole truth."

Her blood ran cold.

Because beneath the message was a name.

The sender.

Nathan.

Her missing brother.

Emily looked up slowly.

Catherine noticed her expression.

"What happened?"

Emily didn't answer.

She stared at the screen.

Because suddenly there were two possibilities.

Either Nathan was alive...

Or someone wanted her to believe he was.

She looked at Preston.

Then at the attorneys.

Then at the phone.

For the first time that night, Emily realized something terrifying.

Her father’s plan had not ended.

It had only begun.

And somewhere in the shadows...

Someone was still playing a dangerous game.

Emily quietly slipped the phone into her hand.

Then she said the words nobody expected:

"I want to see my brother."

Preston's expression changed instantly.

"No."

Everyone noticed.

Emily noticed.

And that one reaction told her more than any document.

Because Preston wasn't afraid of losing money.

He wasn't afraid of losing the company.

He was afraid of Nathan coming back.

Emily took a slow breath.

"Why, Preston?"

He stared at her.

"Why are you afraid of my brother?"

For the first time in years...

Preston Whitmore had no answer.

And Emily knew.

Whatever happened next would destroy everything.
