Chapter 14 — The Truth About Daniel Hartwell

The message on the screen burned into everyone's mind.
"THE REAL DANIEL HARTWELL DIED EIGHT MONTHS AGO."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The ballroom that had witnessed betrayal, secrets, and impossible revelations now faced something even more terrifying.
A question no one wanted to ask.
If the man standing in front of them was not the real Daniel Hartwell...
Then who was he?
Emily stared at her father.
The face.
The voice.
The memories.
Everything inside her screamed that this was the man who raised her.
But after everything she had learned tonight...
She knew one thing.
Nothing was impossible anymore.
"Dad..."
Her voice trembled.
"Tell me."
Daniel looked at her.
His eyes were filled with pain.
Not anger.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for her.
"Emily..."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I need the truth."
A long silence.
Then Daniel finally spoke.
"Your father died eight months ago."
The words hit harder than any confession.
Emily stepped back.
Her heart broke.
Because even though she was standing in front of him...
She had already lost him again.
"Then who are you?"
Daniel looked down.
"My name is Gabriel Hart."
The room exploded with whispers.
Emily felt dizzy.
Gabriel.
Not Daniel.
Not her father.
A stranger.
A man pretending to be the person she loved most.
Nathan moved immediately.
He stepped between Emily and the man.
"Stay away from her."
Gabriel didn't fight.
He simply looked at Nathan.
"I knew you would hate me."
"You lied to us."
"Yes."
"You let her believe her father was alive."
Gabriel lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
Nathan's anger grew.
"Why?"
Gabriel looked at Emily.
"Because Daniel asked me to."
The room went silent.
Emily froze.
"My father asked you?"
Gabriel nodded.
"He knew his time was running out."
Emily looked confused.
"But the message says he died eight months ago."
"He did."
"Then why?"
Gabriel took a slow breath.
"Because your father created one final plan."
Catherine stepped forward.
"Explain."
Gabriel looked at the screen.
"Thomas Bennett discovered Daniel was investigating him."
Everyone froze.
"The man who was Daniel's closest friend was actually the person controlling everything."
Gabriel continued.
"He knew about the company."
"He knew about the trust."
"He knew about Isabella."
A pause.
"And he knew Daniel would eventually expose him."
Emily whispered:
"So he killed my father."
Gabriel nodded.
"Yes."
The truth hurt.
Even though she had suspected it.
Hearing it made it real.
"But why pretend?"
Gabriel looked at her.
"Because Daniel knew Thomas would not stop."
A pause.
"He knew Thomas would come after you."
Emily looked down.
Her baby.
Again.
Everything came back to her child.
Gabriel continued.
"Before Daniel died, he contacted me."
Nathan frowned.
"Who are you?"
Gabriel looked at him.
"I was Daniel's security chief."
Emily remembered.
A man from years ago.
A quiet person who always stood nearby during company events.
Someone she barely noticed.
"I helped your father protect the family."
Nathan stared.
"Then why didn't we know?"
"Because Daniel wanted it that way."
Emily shook her head.
"My father made everyone lie."
Gabriel looked at her sadly.
"He believed a small group of people knowing the truth was safer than everyone knowing a false story."
Emily looked away.
She hated that she understood.
Because every secret had been created from fear.
But every secret had caused pain.
Then Gabriel continued.
"There is something else."
Everyone looked at him.
"Thomas Bennett was not working alone."
Emily felt tired.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
"Who?"
Gabriel looked toward Richard.
Richard's face changed.
"No."
Gabriel nodded.
"Yes."
The room turned.
Richard stepped back.
"I had nothing to do with Thomas."
Gabriel smiled sadly.
"You did exactly what you always did."
"What?"
"Stayed close enough to benefit."
Richard's expression hardened.
"That's a lie."
Gabriel removed a folder.
Inside were documents.
"Financial records."
He handed them to Catherine.
"Thomas used Richard's accounts to move money."
Richard looked shocked.
"No."
Gabriel continued.
"And when Daniel discovered the truth, Richard helped hide evidence."
Emily looked at her uncle.
The final piece.
The last person she trusted.
Gone.
Richard suddenly laughed.
A broken laugh.
"You all think you are better than me."
Daniel's voice came through a recording device Gabriel activated.
Everyone froze.
A familiar voice.
Her father's real voice.
"Richard."
The room became silent.
Daniel's recording continued.
"I spent forty years calling you my brother."
A pause.
"But you spent forty years believing you deserved my life."
Richard closed his eyes.
"You always thought I was weak."
The recording continued.
"No, Richard."
A pause.
"I thought you were family."
That hurt more.
Because betrayal only hurts when trust existed first.
Then Daniel's voice changed.
"The greatest mistake I made was believing love alone could fix greed."
Emily listened.
Tears forming.
Her father continued:
"But my greatest hope is that my daughter learns something I failed to teach."
The recording paused.
Then:
"Power means nothing if you lose your humanity."
The message ended.
Silence.
Richard looked defeated.
Not because he lost money.
Because he lost the story he had told himself.
That he was the victim.
Then the mansion alarms suddenly started.
Everyone turned.
Catherine looked at her phone.
Her face changed.
"What happened?"
She looked at Emily.
"The hospital."
Emily froze.
"What hospital?"
"The maternity center where your doctor works."
Her heart dropped.
"Why?"
Catherine swallowed.
"Someone accessed your medical records."
Nathan stepped forward.
"Who?"
The answer appeared on the screen.
A name.
THOMAS BENNETT.
Emily felt cold.
"He knows about the baby."
Gabriel nodded.
"Yes."
A pause.
"And now he knows the baby is the final heir."
Suddenly, every light in the mansion turned off.
A voice came through the security system.
A man's voice.
Calm.
Confident.
Familiar.
Thomas Bennett.
"Daniel."
Everyone froze.
"After all these years..."
A pause.
"You still don't understand."
The speakers crackled.
"The child is not the key to the inheritance."
Emily's blood ran cold.
Thomas continued:
"The child is the key to something much bigger."
Gabriel looked terrified.
"What does he mean?"
Thomas laughed softly.
"Ask Daniel."
Everyone turned.
The fake Daniel.
Gabriel.
The real truth.
Thomas continued:
"Because the greatest secret Daniel ever kept..."
A pause.
"...was never about money."
The lights came back on.
And on the screen appeared a document.
The title alone made Emily's heart stop.
PROJECT ETERNAL
Nathan stared.
"What is that?"
Gabriel whispered:
"Something your father created."
Emily looked at him.
"Why?"
Gabriel looked terrified.
"Because Daniel knew one day someone would try to destroy the Hartwell family."
A pause.
"And he created a way to stop them."
Emily stared at the document.
Then Thomas spoke one final time:
"Come find me, Emily."
"Before your father tells you what he really created."
May you like
The screen went black.
And Emily realized the final battle had only begun.
