Chapter 12 — The Forgotten Daughter

The ballroom was silent.
Not the uncomfortable silence from earlier.
Not the silence of people waiting for another scandal.
This was different.
This was the silence of a family discovering that everything they believed about themselves was wrong.
Emily stared at the frozen image on the screen.
A face.
A stranger's face.
Yet somehow...
There was something familiar.
The shape of the eyes.
The way she held herself.
The small movement of her head when she looked toward the camera.
Emily felt a strange connection she couldn't explain.
"No..."
The word escaped her.
Her father looked devastated.
Not like a billionaire.
Not like a powerful businessman.
Like a father who had carried a secret for decades.
Emily turned slowly.
"Dad."
Daniel looked at her.
"Tell me this isn't true."
He didn't answer.
And that was the answer.
Emily stepped back.
"My whole life..."
Her voice shook.
"My whole life, I thought I was an only child."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I know."
"How could you hide something like this from me?"
The pain in her voice was worse than anger.
Daniel looked broken.
"Because I was afraid."
Emily laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
"Everyone is always afraid."
She looked around.
"My husband was afraid."
"My uncle was afraid."
"My brother was afraid."
"And now you."
A pause.
"Everyone protects me by lying to me."
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could deny it.
Nathan stepped closer.
"Emily..."
She looked at him.
"Did you know?"
Nathan looked away.
That was enough.
Her expression changed.
"You knew too."
Nathan sighed.
"Only part of it."
Emily shook her head.
"I don't understand."
Daniel walked closer.
"The child was born before you."
Emily froze.
"Before me?"
He nodded.
"Your mother gave birth to twins."
The room seemed to spin.
"Twins?"
Daniel looked at Claire.
She was crying silently.
Emily looked at her mother.
"You knew."
Claire nodded.
"I knew."
"Then why?"
Claire looked destroyed.
"Because the doctors told us one of the babies didn't survive."
Emily's breath stopped.
Daniel continued.
"We were told your sister died minutes after birth."
Emily looked at the screen.
"But she didn't."
"No."
Daniel's voice was quiet.
"She was taken."
The word felt impossible.
Taken.
Not lost.
Not gone.
Taken.
"Who?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Claire whispered:
"Someone at the hospital."
Emily felt cold.
"My God."
Nathan stepped forward.
"Dad spent years searching."
Emily looked at him.
"And he found her?"
Daniel nodded.
"Eventually."
Everyone waited.
"But by then..."
Daniel looked down.
"...she was already living a completely different life."
Emily stared.
"With who?"
Daniel hesitated.
And that hesitation frightened her.
"With people who taught her to hate the Hartwell name."
A terrible silence followed.
Emily looked at the screen again.
The woman in the footage.
The unknown sister.
The missing daughter.
"What's her name?"
Daniel answered quietly:
"Isabella."
Emily repeated the name.
"Isabella Hartwell."
A strange feeling moved through her.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Something else.
Sadness.
Because somewhere in the world was a woman who shared her blood.
A woman who should have grown up beside her.
A woman who should have known their mother.
Their father.
Their family.
Instead...
She grew up believing she had been abandoned.
"Where is she now?"
Daniel looked toward the security screen.
"Inside the vault."
Everyone froze.
Emily turned.
"What?"
Daniel nodded.
"The vault contains documents about the Hartwell legacy."
Catherine frowned.
"How could she access it?"
Daniel looked at Emily.
"Because she has the same authorization."
Emily felt a chill.
"The same as me?"
"Yes."
"Because we're twins."
Daniel nodded.
"The system recognizes both of you as equal heirs."
Emily stared.
"So she came for the inheritance."
Daniel looked uncertain.
"Maybe."
That answer surprised her.
"Maybe?"
Daniel looked toward the screen.
"Emily, if Isabella wanted money, she could have taken it years ago."
A pause.
"She knows things."
"What things?"
Daniel looked at Richard.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Richard's face had gone pale.
Emily noticed.
"You know her."
Richard said nothing.
"Uncle Richard."
Still nothing.
Nathan stepped forward.
"You know where she is."
Richard's silence confirmed it.
Emily felt sick.
"How?"
Richard finally spoke.
His voice was quieter than before.
"Because I found her."
The room froze.
Daniel's expression turned furious.
"You."
Richard looked at him.
"Yes."
Emily stared.
"You found my sister?"
Richard looked at her.
"Years ago."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
Richard laughed bitterly.
"Because by then, everything had changed."
Emily felt anger rising.
"You let us believe she was dead."
Richard looked away.
"Your father would never have understood."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Understood what?"
Richard's eyes hardened.
"That Isabella hated you."
Emily stopped.
The words hurt.
"Hated me?"
Richard nodded.
"She believed you replaced her."
Emily felt her chest tighten.
"That's not true."
"I know."
Richard's voice softened slightly.
"But she didn't."
A painful silence followed.
Because Emily realized something.
Her sister wasn't just a missing heir.
She was another victim.
A child who lost her family.
A child who grew up with someone else's version of the truth.
Then suddenly...
The underground vault alarm stopped.
The screen changed.
A message appeared.
Not from the security system.
From Isabella.
Everyone stared.
The words appeared slowly:
"Daniel Hartwell. You finally decided to tell her."
Emily felt a chill.
Another message followed:
"But you still haven't told Emily the worst part."
Daniel looked terrified.
Emily turned.
"Dad."
He didn't answer.
The final message appeared.
"Ask your father why he chose Emily over me."
The room went silent.
Emily looked at Daniel.
Her heart sank.
Because for the first time...
She wondered if there was another side to the story.
A side nobody had told her.
"Dad..."
Her voice trembled.
"What is she talking about?"
Daniel looked at his daughter.
And the pain in his eyes told her the truth.
There was one final secret.
May you like
One he had spent decades hiding.
And it was the secret that destroyed his first family.
