CHAPTER 7 – The Man I Buried

The recording replayed in my mind.

"...Claire's child will already belong to me. Just as her father always did."

There was only one explanation.

Victor Voss was lying.

Or...

I had spent twenty-seven years mourning a man who had never died.

Claire was rushed into the operating room.

The lead obstetrician looked at me.

"We have to begin now."

"Natural delivery?"

He shook his head.

"The baby's heart rate is dropping again."

Another emergency C-section.

Exactly what Daniel had threatened.

Except this time, every person in the room had been personally vetted by Homeland Security.

Every monitor had a duplicate backup.

Every medication was independently tested.

If someone wanted to harm Claire...

They would have to do it under the eyes of federal agents.

As the surgery began, my phone vibrated.

Rebecca.

"I opened the envelope."

"And?"

"You need to hear this exactly as it was written."

Paper rustled on the other end.

Then she read aloud.

Evelyn,

If this letter has reached you, then Victor has finally made his move.

My name is Samuel Cross. I was Director of Security at Blackwood Manor for sixteen years.

Everything Victor built was founded on one lie.

The children were never trafficked for money.

They were collected for inheritance.

I closed my eyes.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know yet."

Rebecca continued reading.

Victor believes bloodlines can be manufactured.

He has spent thirty years selecting newborns from powerful families.

Some became heirs.

Some became leverage.

The unlucky ones simply vanished.

The words made no sense.

Collected?

Selected?

Manufactured?

Victor wasn't running a hospital.

He was building something.

Something much larger.

Suddenly the operating room erupted in activity.

"Heart rate stabilizing."

"Blood pressure holding."

The surgeon smiled behind her mask.

"We're almost there."

Claire reached weakly toward me.

I squeezed her hand.

"You're doing beautifully."

Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes.

"I'm scared."

"I know."

"But you're not alone anymore."

Seconds later...

A cry filled the room.

Strong.

Healthy.

Beautiful.

The surgeon lifted a tiny baby girl into the air.

"Congratulations."

Claire broke into tears.

"My daughter..."

The entire room seemed to exhale at once.

For the first time in days...

Hope returned.

Then every monitor suddenly went black.

Not just one.

All of them.

Emergency power failed.

The lights dimmed.

The operating room doors locked automatically.

Someone had overridden the security system.

A mechanical voice echoed through the speakers.

"Containment protocol initiated."

The surgeons froze.

"What is this?"

One technician tried reopening the doors.

Nothing.

They were sealed from the outside.

Rebecca's voice came over my secure phone.

"Evelyn!"

"The hospital just went into lockdown."

"I know."

"No—you don't."

"What happened?"

"The lockdown didn't come from St. Gabriel."

Silence.

"It came from another facility."

Across the city...

Inside an abandoned government data center...

A hidden control room came to life.

Rows of servers powered on simultaneously.

One enormous screen displayed blueprints of every hospital Victor had ever owned.

A single operator typed calmly at a keyboard.

Face hidden.

Identity unknown.

On the monitor appeared one command.

PROJECT LULLABY: PHASE TWO ACTIVATED

Back inside the operating room, the newborn suddenly disappeared.

I looked toward the warming station.

Empty.

A nurse screamed.

"The baby's gone!"

The room exploded into chaos.

Every staff member searched frantically.

The infant had vanished within seconds.

Impossible.

There had been no open doors.

No broken windows.

No exits.

Then...

A quiet voice came from behind us.

"Looking for someone?"

Everyone turned.

Standing in the corner was an elderly janitor pushing a cleaning cart.

No one remembered seeing him enter.

He slowly removed his cap.

Then peeled away what looked like his face.

A silicone disguise.

Underneath...

The same man who had posed as Dr. Adrian Mercer.

The Shepherd.

He gently held the newborn in his arms.

The baby wasn't crying.

She was sleeping peacefully.

He smiled.

"You secured the mother exactly as planned."

Federal agents raised their weapons.

"Put the baby down!"

Instead...

He pressed a button hidden inside the cleaning cart.

The floor beneath him split open.

A concealed platform began descending.

The Shepherd looked directly at me.

"You've spent years chasing the wrong monster."

The platform dropped into darkness.

The floor sealed shut above him.

He—and Claire's newborn daughter—were gone.

Claire opened her eyes just in time to see the empty bassinet.

"No..."

Her voice barely escaped her lips.

"No..."

She tried sitting up despite the fresh surgical wound.

"My baby..."

Doctors restrained her gently.

I stood frozen.

Unable to breathe.

Unable to think.

Then my phone vibrated one final time.

A live video had been sent from an unknown number.

Claire's newborn appeared on the screen.

Safe.

Wrapped in a pink blanket.

Someone cradled her carefully.

Then the camera turned.

Victor Voss smiled into the lens.

May you like

"Welcome to the real inheritance, Evelyn."

The video ended.
