CHAPTER 17 – The Empty Chair

The command center remained silent long after the screen went black.

No one spoke.

No one even seemed to breathe.

The image of the circular table lingered in everyone's mind.

Most disturbing of all...

The empty chair.

Rebecca replayed the transmission frame by frame.

"Freeze it."

The technician enlarged the image.

Each chair carried a small silver plaque.

Most names were impossible to read.

One, however, came into focus.

Chair 17

Rebecca frowned.

"Again."

The image sharpened.

Beneath the chair number were two engraved words.

Reserved.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"They've already chosen her."

Rebecca turned.

"Chosen who?"

Eleanor looked toward Claire, who was holding her sleeping daughter in the adjacent medical suite.

"The baby."

Marcus paced the room.

"This doesn't make sense."

"They kidnapped her..."

"They returned her..."

"And now they're inviting us?"

Victor finally answered.

"They aren't inviting you."

Everyone looked toward him.

"They're announcing the next stage."

Rebecca slammed a folder onto the table.

"No more riddles."

"What is Chair Seventeen?"

Victor remained silent for several seconds.

Then he spoke.

"Every generation..."

"...The Circle appoints seventeen guardians."

"The eighteenth seat..."

He looked toward the sleeping infant through the reinforced glass.

"...belongs to someone they never vote for."

Claire instinctively held her daughter tighter.

"What are you saying?"

Victor's voice softened.

"They believe your daughter was born to inherit something."

Claire shook her head.

"She's just a baby."

Victor looked genuinely saddened.

"To you..."

"Yes."

"To them..."

"She's a symbol."

Rebecca wasn't interested in mythology.

"I want facts."

Victor nodded.

"Then start with Samuel."

He pointed toward an old metal box recovered from Blackwood Manor.

"I never opened it."

"Why?"

"Because Samuel ordered me not to."

Marcus examined the box.

No lock.

No hinges.

Only one engraved sentence.

Open only after the child returns.

The child had returned.

Claire's daughter was finally safe.

Rebecca carefully lifted the lid.

Inside rested three items.

An old cassette recorder.

A sealed envelope.

And a brass key unlike any they'd found before.

The key was engraved with a Roman numeral.

XVIII

The envelope was addressed in familiar handwriting.

To Evelyn... if I fail.

My hands trembled as I unfolded the letter.

Samuel's words seemed impossibly alive.

If you're reading this, then I couldn't stop them.

Don't hate Victor.

He made terrible choices, but not the first one.

The first mistake was mine.

A tear rolled down my cheek.

Samuel continued.

Legacy was never supposed to control children.

It was built to hide them.

The Circle hunted bloodlines they believed could unite political power, scientific influence, and enormous wealth.

We created safe identities for those children.

Then The Circle corrupted everything.

Rebecca slowly lowered the letter.

"So Legacy began as a rescue operation."

Victor nodded.

"Until greed replaced fear."

The cassette recorder clicked to life.

Samuel's voice filled the room.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

"Evelyn...

If Claire survived...

Then you succeeded where I failed."

Claire covered her mouth.

She had never heard her father's voice before.

Samuel continued.

"Claire was never Candidate Seventeen."

Everyone looked up.

"What?"

Victor stared at the recorder in disbelief.

Samuel's voice remained calm.

"Candidate Seventeen was only a decoy."

The room froze.

Rebecca whispered,

"Then who..."

Samuel answered almost immediately.

"The real Candidate Seventeen..."

"...was Emily."

Emily's eyes widened.

"No..."

She shook her head violently.

"That's impossible."

Victor looked as stunned as everyone else.

"I never knew."

Samuel continued.

"Victor believed Claire was the key because I wanted him to believe it."

Emily stepped backward.

"My entire life..."

She whispered.

"...was a lie."

Suddenly, alarms blared throughout the compound.

A communications officer burst into the room.

"We've got multiple aircraft approaching!"

Rebecca looked at the radar.

Six unidentified jets.

No transponders.

Flying in perfect formation.

The Icelandic Air Force had already attempted radio contact.

No response.

Another officer rushed in.

"Satellite communications just intercepted an emergency broadcast."

He connected the audio.

A calm male voice filled the room.

"Attention."

"This is Chairman Orion."

"The Circle formally requests the return of Candidate Seventeen."

Everyone looked at Emily.

The voice continued.

"Failure to comply..."

"...will result in the release of every classified Legacy archive currently hidden around the world."

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Eleanor answered quietly.

"It means millions of people will discover their identities have been manipulated for decades."

Rebecca looked toward the approaching aircraft.

"Who is Chairman Orion?"

Victor slowly sat down.

His face had gone pale.

"I've never seen him."

Rebecca frowned.

"You worked for The Circle."

Victor nodded once.

"And even I..."

"...answered only to his voice."

The broadcast ended.

Seconds later, every phone inside the command center vibrated simultaneously.

A new message had arrived.

Not to one person.

To everyone.

There was no text.

Only a single image.

A photograph taken moments earlier.

It showed the secure medical suite from above.

Claire was visible.

The baby was visible.

But one detail made Rebecca's blood run cold.

Standing quietly in the corner of the room...

Just outside the camera's focus...

Was a woman in a nurse's uniform.

No one in the room remembered seeing her enter.

And when security rushed to the medical suite—

The nurse...

May you like

And the baby...

Were gone.
