CHAPTER 3 – Project Lullaby

The cyberattack lasted only eleven seconds.
Yet it changed the entire investigation.
Rebecca Ortiz stood in the dark forensic lab, staring at the blank monitors as backup generators hummed back to life.
"Tell me someone copied that message."
A young analyst nodded.
"The image is preserved."
"The source?"
He shook his head.
"It wasn't sent through the internet."
Rebecca frowned.
"What?"
"It came from inside our own network."
Silence filled the room.
Someone with high-level access had reached a secured federal system.
Someone who knew exactly what investigators had discovered.
Twenty minutes later, Rebecca arrived at Claire's hospital suite.
I was sitting beside my daughter, listening to the steady rhythm of the baby's heartbeat.
Rebecca closed the door.
"We have a problem."
"I assumed we did."
She handed me a tablet.
On the screen was the message that had appeared in the lab.
STOP DIGGING. OR THE NEXT MOTHER DIES.
Claire's face turned pale.
"They're talking about me."
Rebecca didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
Within the hour, Homeland Security transformed the maternity floor into a secure zone.
Two agents guarded every entrance.
Visitor lists were canceled.
Medical staff were re-screened one by one.
Even the operating room scheduled for Claire's delivery received additional security.
No one entered without biometric verification.
Still...
I couldn't shake the feeling that we were already too late.
Across town, Daniel sat inside his holding cell.
The steel door opened.
He expected another investigator.
Instead, Victor Voss walked in.
No guards accompanied him.
No attorney announced him.
He simply entered as though the building belonged to him.
Daniel stood.
"How did you get in here?"
Victor ignored the question.
"You've made a mess."
"They froze everything."
"They froze what you knew about."
Daniel stared.
"What does that mean?"
Victor sat across from him.
"When I built this family, I never intended for hospitals to become the business."
Daniel blinked.
"They were never the business."
A long silence followed.
Finally Victor leaned forward.
"The patients were."
Daniel's confidence cracked.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor's calm expression never changed.
"You always believed St. Gabriel earned its fortune through surgeries."
"It did."
"No."
Victor folded his hands.
"The hospitals opened doors."
"Doors to what?"
Victor looked directly into his son's eyes.
"Information."
Medical histories.
DNA samples.
Insurance records.
Political donors.
Corporate executives.
Foreign diplomats.
Every person who entered the hospital trusted its systems.
Every blood test.
Every scan.
Every genetic report.
Stored.
Copied.
Sold.
Protected by laws that assumed doctors would never become merchants.
Victor smiled faintly.
"Healthcare is the greatest intelligence network ever created."
Daniel slowly sat back down.
"You never told me."
"You never needed to know."
Back at St. Gabriel, federal agents unlocked another encrypted folder inside Project Lullaby.
This one contained no medical charts.
Only videos.
Dozens of them.
Every file had a date.
Every recording came from operating rooms.
The first video began with an ordinary C-section.
Doctors worked calmly.
A healthy baby cried.
Then...
The camera shifted.
Not toward the infant.
Toward the anesthesia monitor.
A gloved hand quietly adjusted a dosage.
Only slightly.
Barely noticeable.
The patient's heartbeat weakened.
Minutes later...
Flatline.
The official report called it a rare complication.
The video suggested something else.
No one in the room spoke.
Rebecca watched another recording.
Then another.
Different patients.
Different surgeons.
Same pattern.
Tiny adjustments.
Perfect timing.
No obvious mistakes.
Deaths that looked natural.
She whispered,
"This wasn't random."
One investigator nodded.
"It was a protocol."
Meanwhile, Claire couldn't sleep.
Every sound in the hallway made her flinch.
I remained beside her.
She reached for my hand.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"What if Daniel wasn't lying?"
"About what?"
"What if he really can reach the operating room?"
Before I could answer, the lights flickered once.
Then stabilized.
A nurse entered.
"I need to check the IV."
Rebecca immediately stepped between them.
"I haven't seen you before."
The nurse smiled politely.
"I'm covering the night shift."
Rebecca looked at her ID badge.
Everything appeared legitimate.
Still...
Something felt wrong.
"Step away from the patient."
The nurse hesitated.
Only for a second.
Then she suddenly dropped the clipboard.
Instead of picking it up...
She ran.
"Stop!"
Agents rushed into the hallway.
The woman sprinted toward the emergency stairwell.
She shoved a security guard into the wall before disappearing downstairs.
Two floors below, officers cornered her near the loading dock.
She reached into her pocket.
Everyone drew their weapons.
Instead of a gun...
She pulled out a disposable phone.
One button.
One message sent.
Then she smashed the phone beneath her heel.
By the time investigators recovered it...
Every file had been remotely erased.
Hours later, forensic technicians searched the fake nurse's belongings.
Inside her locker they found:
A forged nursing license.
A prepaid passport.
Fifty thousand dollars in cash.
And one folded photograph.
It showed Claire leaving a prenatal appointment two weeks earlier.
Someone had been watching her.
Long before today.
Just before dawn, Rebecca received another call from the cybercrime division.
"We identified the sender of the hospital surveillance photos."
"Who?"
A pause.
"You're not going to believe this."
"Try me."
"The account belongs to someone declared dead six years ago."
Rebecca frowned.
"Dead people don't send encrypted files."
"Apparently..."
The analyst swallowed.
"...this one does."
At sunrise, I stood alone beside the hospital window.
The city looked peaceful.
Too peaceful.
Behind me, Claire finally slept.
For the first time in months, she looked safe.
But safety can be an illusion.
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I answered without speaking.
A woman's voice whispered only seven words:
"Ask Victor about the children who disappeared."
The line went dead.
I looked at the screen.
No caller ID.
No trace.
Only silence.
And for the first time since Daniel's arrest...
I realized the investigation had never been about one abusive husband.
May you like
It was about a secret buried beneath St. Gabriel for decades.
A secret someone was still willing to kill to protect.
