CHAPTER 6 – The Replacement

The anesthesiologist's smile never reached his eyes.

His badge read:

Dr. Adrian Mercer

The name hit me like ice water.

I had memorized it only hours earlier.

Three mothers.

Three "unexpected complications."

Three deaths.

Every file carried the same signature.

I stepped between him and Claire's bed.

"I haven't seen you on this floor before."

He didn't hesitate.

"I was transferred from the East Campus."

One of the nurses frowned.

"There is no East Campus."

For the briefest moment, his expression changed.

That was all I needed.

"Lock the doors," I ordered.

The room erupted into motion.

Security officers rushed toward the operating suite.

Dr. Mercer reacted instantly.

Instead of reaching for medical equipment...

He reached inside his lab coat.

The guards drew their weapons.

But he wasn't holding a gun.

He produced a small glass vial.

Without warning, he smashed it against the floor.

A cloud of thick white smoke exploded through the room.

Nurses screamed.

The fire suppression system activated immediately.

Emergency shutters slammed shut.

Visibility vanished.

When the smoke finally cleared less than thirty seconds later...

Dr. Adrian Mercer was gone.

Only his identification badge remained on the floor.

Rebecca's voice crackled through the radio from Blackwood Manor.

"What happened?"

I answered while helping Claire onto a backup gurney.

"He got inside the operating room."

"Is Claire safe?"

"For now."

A pause.

"Mercer escaped."

Rebecca muttered something under her breath.

"That wasn't Mercer."

"What?"

"The real Dr. Adrian Mercer has been dead for eleven years."

Within minutes, facial recognition experts analyzed the surveillance footage.

The "doctor's" face matched no active medical license.

But an old intelligence database returned one partial match.

Former military.

Private contractor.

Specialized in covert extraction missions.

No confirmed identity.

Only a codename.

The Shepherd.

Claire clutched my hand as another contraction hit.

"Mom..."

"I'm here."

"What if they come back?"

I brushed her hair from her forehead.

"They'll have to get through me."

She smiled weakly.

"You always say that."

"And I've always meant it."

Back beneath Blackwood Manor, Rebecca's team continued searching the underground archive.

One forensic analyst called out.

"I found another room."

The steel door required both a fingerprint and a six-digit code.

Rather than force it open, Rebecca searched Victor's office upstairs.

Inside the desk drawer lay an antique silver pocket watch.

Nothing unusual.

Until she opened it.

Instead of a photograph...

The inside cover contained six engraved numbers.

091214

The code.

The steel door unlocked with a heavy metallic click.

The room beyond looked untouched.

Unlike the archive outside, this chamber contained no shelves.

Only eight wooden cribs arranged in a circle.

Each crib bore a brass nameplate.

Rebecca slowly read them aloud.

"Emma..."

"Jacob..."

"Olivia..."

"Lucas..."

The final crib stopped her cold.

Its brass plate read:

Claire Hale

She froze.

"No..."

An investigator stepped beside her.

"What is it?"

Rebecca pointed silently.

Claire's name.

Carved decades before she had ever met Daniel.

Hidden beneath Claire's empty crib was a sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in elegant handwriting:

For Evelyn Hale

My name.

Rebecca immediately contacted me.

"We found something."

"What?"

"I think you need to see it yourself."

"Tell me now."

She hesitated.

"I can't."

"Rebecca."

"You won't believe me unless you read it."

Back at St. Gabriel, labor intensified.

The obstetric team prepared for an emergency delivery.

This time every doctor underwent biometric verification.

Every medication was scanned twice.

Every syringe required two signatures.

No one entered alone.

Trust had become a luxury.

As Claire was wheeled toward the operating room, she suddenly grabbed my wrist.

"Mom."

"What is it?"

"If something happens..."

"Nothing's going to happen."

She shook her head.

"Promise me one thing."

I nodded.

"Find my father."

The words caught me completely off guard.

"You know your father died."

Claire looked into my eyes.

"That's what you told me."

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered,

"But Daniel said my father is alive."

My heart stopped.

"What exactly did he tell you?"

Claire struggled through another contraction.

"He said..."

She closed her eyes.

"...Victor has been hiding him for years."

Before I could ask another question, the operating room doors burst open.

A young federal agent sprinted inside.

"Mrs. Hale!"

"What happened?"

"We intercepted Victor's private satellite phone."

"And?"

"He left a voice message."

The agent handed me a recorder.

Victor's calm voice filled the room.

"By the time you hear this, Claire's child will already belong to me. Just as her father always did."

The recording ended.

No explanation.

No location.

Only those final chilling words.

For the first time in years...

I began to question everything I believed about my own past.

Including the man I had buried twenty-seven years ago.
