CHAPTER 19 – The Device

No one spoke after the message disappeared.
The words lingered on every darkened monitor.
SHE IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS IT.
Rebecca looked at the radiologist.
"I need a full-body scan."
"Of Claire?"
"Of everyone."
Within the hour, the military hospital became a screening center.
Every person directly connected to Legacy volunteered.
Claire.
Emily.
Victor.
Eleanor.
Even Marcus insisted on being scanned.
The results came back one by one.
Claire—positive.
Emily—positive.
Victor—negative.
Marcus—negative.
Eleanor...
The technician froze.
Rebecca stepped closer.
"What is it?"
The young radiologist swallowed.
"There are two."
Silence.
"Two devices?"
He nodded.
"One near her left shoulder."
"The other..."
He enlarged the image.
"...is beside her spine."
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"I was afraid of that."
"You knew?"
She nodded slowly.
"I've known since I was fifteen."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because removing one..."
She looked toward Claire.
"...activates the other."
Rebecca frowned.
"Activates what?"
Eleanor answered quietly.
"I don't know."
The military laboratory immediately began analyzing Claire's CT scans.
The device wasn't metallic.
It wasn't electronic.
There was no battery.
No radio signal.
No identifiable manufacturer.
One scientist whispered,
"It isn't a tracker."
Another pointed toward the enlarged image.
"It looks almost..."
He hesitated.
"...biological."
Victor asked to see the scans.
For several long seconds, he simply stared.
Then he slowly sat down.
"No..."
Rebecca watched him carefully.
"You recognize it."
Victor nodded.
"I thought they destroyed every prototype."
"What prototype?"
Victor took a deep breath.
"They called them..."
He struggled to say the word.
"...Memory Seeds."
Marcus frowned.
"What are Memory Seeds?"
Victor answered without looking up.
"Experimental implants."
"They don't control the body."
"They control memory."
Rebecca stared.
"That's impossible."
"So did I."
Victor looked toward Claire.
"They were designed to suppress traumatic experiences."
"At first."
"Then The Circle improved them."
"Improved?"
Victor's voice became heavy.
"They discovered memories aren't just erased."
"They can be replaced."
Claire instinctively touched the scar beneath her collarbone.
"So..."
"My childhood..."
Victor nodded.
"May not be entirely yours."
The room fell silent.
Claire looked at me.
"Mom..."
"What if I don't remember you correctly?"
I took her hand.
"You remember enough."
She broke down crying.
"I don't know what's real anymore."
Meanwhile, forensic engineers finally recovered hidden data from the music box found aboard the evacuation ship.
A miniature storage crystal had been concealed beneath its winding key.
The recovered file contained a list.
No explanations.
Just names.
Thirty-four of them.
Claire Hale.
Emily Voss.
Eleanor Hale.
Twenty-one government officials.
Nine scientists.
Two journalists.
Marcus leaned over the screen.
"What's this?"
Rebecca answered quietly.
"A registry."
At the bottom of the list appeared a title.
ACTIVE CARRIERS
Everyone looked toward Claire.
The device inside her wasn't unique.
It was part of something much larger.
At that exact moment, the communications room received another encrypted transmission.
Unlike the others...
This one included live video.
The screen flickered.
A dimly lit library appeared.
Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
A fireplace.
An old man sat with his back to the camera.
He spoke without turning around.
"Victor."
Victor's face lost all color.
"You..."
The old man nodded.
"I see you've finally started telling the truth."
Rebecca stepped closer.
"Who are you?"
The man ignored her.
Instead, he addressed Victor.
"You disappointed me."
Victor lowered his head.
"I know."
"You protected Candidate Seventeen."
"Yes."
"You allowed the infant to escape."
"Yes."
The old man sighed.
"Thirty years..."
"...and sentiment ruined everything."
He finally turned his chair.
For the first time...
Everyone saw the face of the man known only as Chairman Orion.
The room went completely silent.
Claire stared at the screen.
Emily gasped.
Even Victor seemed unable to breathe.
Because the face looking back at them...
Was Samuel Hale.
My husband.
The man whose funeral I had attended.
The father Claire had mourned her entire life.
Alive.
Older.
Calm.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then directly at me.
"Evelyn..."
His voice was exactly as I remembered.
"I've been trying to come home for twenty-seven years."
The transmission ended.
No explanation.
No location.
Only silence.
Claire whispered through tears,
"...Dad?"
No one answered.
Because for the first time since Legacy began...
May you like
Everyone realized the greatest mystery had never been Victor.
It had always been Samuel.
