Chapter 3 - Tyler’s Father

Mark came to our house the next morning.

He looked nothing like the villain Lauren had described for two years.

He looked exhausted.

He carried a folder.

James noticed it immediately.

“What’s that?”

Mark sat down.

“Everything I was told nobody would believe.”

My heart sank.

He opened the folder.

Photographs.

Emails.

School notes.

Text messages.

One document was from Tyler’s pediatrician.

Another from a custody mediator.

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t we know about this?”

Mark laughed bitterly.

“You mean why didn’t Lauren tell her family?”

I felt ashamed.

“That’s fair.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“You believed your sister.”

“I should have asked questions.”

“Yes.”

That hurt.

Because he was right.

Mark pointed to one photograph.

Tyler’s upper arm.

Finger-shaped marks.

My throat tightened.

“When was this?”

“Fourteen months ago.”

“What did Lauren say?”

“He fell from a scooter.”

“And what did Tyler say?”

Mark looked down.

“He said Mommy squeezed him because he wouldn’t stop crying.”

James sat very still.

“What happened legally?”

“Nothing useful.”

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“Lauren said I coached him.”

The phrase sounded familiar.

Exactly the sort of thing Lauren said whenever anyone contradicted her.

Mark continued.

“She told the mediator I was trying to build a custody case.”

“Were you?”

“Yes.”

He looked directly at me.

“Because I was scared.”

I did not know what to say.

Mark opened another document.

“Then your parents intervened.”

I looked up.

“My parents?”

He nodded.

“Your father gave a statement saying Lauren was patient and I was vindictive.”

My chest tightened.

“Did Dad know about the bruises?”

“He knew I alleged them.”

That distinction mattered less than I wanted it to.

Mark showed us messages from my mother.

Please stop attacking Lauren.

She is under enormous stress.

Tyler needs stability.

I recognized the tone.

The same tone she had used the night before.

Do not choose sides.

Do not make it worse.

Do not create drama.

James looked at Mark.

“What do you want?”

“My son safe.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

I believed him.

Then Mark said something that made everything colder.

“Lauren called me at two this morning.”

“What did she say?”

“She said Sarah and James were going to lie about her.”

I stared at him.

May you like

Mark continued.

“And then she said if I used what happened with Emma against her, I would never see Tyler again.”
