Chapter 14 - The Hearing
The January hearing lasted almost six hours.
Mark testified first.
He did not attack Lauren.
He described Tyler.
His sleep problems.
Fear.
School behavior.
The things Tyler said.
Then James testified about the barbecue and Christmas.
Lauren’s attorney tried to portray him as intimidating.
“Captain Walker, are you trained to give commands?”
“Yes.”
“Are you accustomed to people obeying you?”
“In military settings.”
“So when you told Lauren to leave, you expected compliance?”
James looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Because you were angry?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she struck my six-month-old daughter.”
The courtroom became silent.
No drama.
No speeches.
Just the fact.
Then my parents testified.
That was the hardest part.
Mom admitted protecting Lauren.
Dad admitted minimizing prior incidents.
Lauren stared at them like they had become strangers.
Then the Abby incident came into the record.
Lauren began crying.
Her attorney requested a break.
The judge granted one.
In the hallway, Lauren walked toward me.
A deputy stepped closer.
She stopped.
“You happy?”
“No.”
“You always wanted them to choose you.”
“This isn’t about choosing me.”
“Everything is about you now.”
“No.”
I pointed toward the courtroom.
“This is about Tyler.”
She laughed bitterly.
“You don’t even know him.”
“I know enough to want him safe.”
Her face changed.
For one moment, I saw exhaustion instead of rage.
Then she whispered:
“I don’t know how to stop.”
That was the most frightening thing she had ever said.
And maybe the most honest.
I answered quietly.
“Then get help.”
She looked at me.
“Will everyone forgive me?”
“I don’t know.”
Her eyes filled.
“That’s not fair.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Help is not a trade for forgiveness.”
The deputy called us back inside.
By evening, the judge ruled.
Mark received primary temporary custody.
Lauren’s visits remained supervised.
She was ordered into intensive therapy and parenting intervention.
