Chapter 15 - The Lowest Christmas

February was worse than January.

Lauren stopped speaking to all of us.

Mom cried every Sunday.

Dad became quiet.

Tyler improved slowly.

Emma began crawling.

Life continued in the strange way life does after something enormous.

One afternoon, a package arrived.

No return address.

Inside was Emma’s red Christmas onesie.

I froze.

We had left it at my parents’ house that night.

Underneath it was a note.

I’m sorry.

No signature.

Lauren’s handwriting.

I sat on the stairs and stared at it.

James found me there.

“What do you want to do?”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t have to know today.”

I folded the onesie.

Then put it in a box.

I did not throw it away.

I did not display it.

Some things needed a neutral place until emotions became less loud.

Two weeks later, Lauren’s therapist contacted me through proper channels.

Lauren wanted to write a structured accountability letter.

I agreed to receive it.

Not because I wanted reconciliation.

Because I wanted to know whether she understood.

The letter began badly.

“I never meant to hurt Emma.”

Then it improved.

“I understand intention does not erase action.”

I kept reading.

“I struck a baby because I was irritated.”

No minimization.

No “tap.”

No “discipline.”

Then:

“I frightened Tyler because I made my emotions his responsibility.”

I stopped.

That sentence mattered.

“I blamed Sarah because anger felt easier than shame.”

My eyes filled.

At the end:

“I am not asking to return to family events.”

“I am asking everyone to believe I am finally trying to become safe.”

I handed the letter to James.

He read it.

Then said:

“That is better.”

“Do you believe her?”

“I believe the letter.”

“That’s not the same.”

“No.”

It wasn’t.

Words were a beginning.

Behavior would decide the rest.
