Chapter 18 - The Second Christmas

December arrived.
Mom asked once.
“Can Lauren come?”
I looked at James.
He looked at me.
We had already discussed it.
“Yes.”
Mom began crying.
“But there are rules.”
She nodded quickly.
“No wine.”
“Of course.”
“Lauren does not hold Emma.”
Mom’s face changed.
Then she nodded.
“Okay.”
“If Emma becomes uncomfortable, we leave.”
“Yes.”
“If anyone minimizes what happened last year, we leave.”
Mom reached for my hand.
“No one will.”
Christmas dinner felt different immediately.
Quieter.
More intentional.
Lauren arrived early.
No wine.
She brought Tyler and a wrapped book for Emma.
She did not approach Emma.
She greeted me.
Then James.
“Captain.”
He nodded.
“Lauren.”
No hostility.
No warmth.
Respectful distance.
Dinner began.
Emma sat in a high chair between James and me.
Tyler told terrible jokes.
Dad laughed too loudly.
Mom overcooked the potatoes.
It almost felt normal.
Then Emma dropped a spoon.
Everyone froze.
Not because the spoon mattered.
Because one year earlier, a small sound had preceded catastrophe.
Lauren noticed.
Her face changed.
She bent down slowly.
Picked up the spoon.
Placed it on the counter.
Then stepped away.
No irritation.
No attempt to prove anything.
Later, Emma toddled toward her.
Lauren froze.
She looked at me.
I nodded once.
Not permission to pick her up.
Only permission not to run away.
Emma touched Lauren’s knee.
Lauren smiled through tears.
“Hi, Emma.”
That was all.
No hug.
No redemption scene.
Just two words.
And control.
May you like
James squeezed my hand beneath the table.
Because sometimes growth was visible in the thing someone chose not to do.
