Chapter 19 - What Dad Finally Said

After dinner, Dad asked everyone to stay.
He stood near the fireplace holding no glass.
No speech notes.
“I owe this family an apology.”
Lauren looked at him.
So did I.
He continued.
“For years, I thought keeping peace was the same as protecting people.”
Mom began crying.
Dad looked toward Tyler.
“It wasn’t.”
Then Emma.
“It wasn’t.”
He turned to Lauren.
“I protected you from consequences because I thought that was love.”
Lauren’s face tightened.
“It wasn’t.”
She nodded through tears.
Dad looked at me.
“And I asked you to stay quiet because your honesty was inconvenient.”
My eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
I did not realize how much I needed that until he said it.
Mom spoke next.
“I’m sorry too.”
No qualifications.
No “but.”
Then Lauren stood.
She looked around the room.
“One year ago, I hit a baby.”
The sentence landed heavily.
“I told everyone it was nothing because admitting what it was would have meant admitting what I had become.”
Tyler watched her.
Lauren continued.
“I hurt people and then demanded that they make me feel better about it.”
She looked at me.
“I’m working on that.”
Not fixed.
Working.
That was more believable.
James stood last.
He did not make a speech.
He simply lifted his coffee mug.
“To Emma’s second Christmas.”
Everyone laughed softly.
Emma banged her spoon against the tray.
No one flinched.
That mattered too.
Later, while we packed the car, Lauren approached me.
“Thank you for letting me come.”
“This wasn’t a reward.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
She smiled faintly.
May you like
“See you when you’re ready.”
For the first time in our lives, Lauren left without demanding an answer.
