Chapter 8 - The Secret Clause

The emergency board meeting began at 8:03 a.m.
Charlotte sat in Eleanorâs old chair.
Adrian sat across from her.
Lucien Laurent sat beside his daughter.
Simon Graves entered carrying a black legal folder.
Charlotte immediately knew Vivienne had been telling the truth about one thing.
They had prepared something.
Simon opened the meeting.
âBefore Ms. Vale attempts to exercise controlling authority, the board must review a succession issue.â
Daniel leaned forward.
âWhat issue?â
Simon removed a document.
Eleanorâs trust contained a private lineage clause.
If Charlotte was proven not to be Eleanorâs biological daughter, her controlling shares would pass into a family foundation overseen by the board.
Charlotte stared at him.
âThatâs absurd.â
Simon placed a birth certificate on the table.
Then hospital records.
According to the documents, Eleanor Vale had suffered complications that made pregnancy medically impossible two years before Charlotte was born.
Vivienne watched Charlotte closely.
Lucien folded his hands.
Simon continued.
âWe believe Charlotte Vale was adopted privately.â
The room erupted.
Charlotte felt the blood leave her face.
She remembered whispers from childhood.
People saying she did not resemble Eleanor.
She had always dismissed them.
Daniel asked.
âWhere did these records come from?â
âEleanorâs private physician.â
âWho is dead.â
âYes.â
Charlotte looked at Simon.
âYou expect me to believe my mother built an empire for me and secretly wrote a clause designed to take it away?â
Simon smiled.
âI expect the board to follow the trust.â
Charlotte opened Eleanorâs ledger.
Then she stopped.
One notation near the beginning suddenly mattered.
Simon asked for maternal records again.
Charlotte closed the ledger.
âNo.â
Adrian leaned forward.
âWhat?â
âNo vote.â
âYou cannot stop the board.â
âI can when the documents are fraudulent.â
Simonâs smile faded.
Charlotte looked toward Daniel.
âCall St. Augustine Hospital.â
âThatâs where I was born.â
Simon scoffed.
âThe hospital closed years ago.â
âThe maternity wing did.â
Charlotte remembered something Eleanor had told her when she was sixteen.
Never trust a copy when the original still exists.
The phrase echoed Eleanorâs message from Room 1816.
Charlotte had always assumed it was advice about contracts.
Now she understood.
She called the hospital archive herself.
An administrator answered.
Charlotte provided the record number on Simonâs birth certificate.
There was a pause.
Then the administrator said.
âThat number belongs to a male child born in 1989.â
The room went silent.
Charlotte was born in 1992.
Daniel slowly looked toward Simon.
The administrator continued.
âWe do have a Charlotte Eleanor Vale.â
âWould you like the original record released under subpoena?â
Charlotte smiled.
âYes.â
Then she looked across the table.
âVery much.â
Simonâs face had gone white.
Vivienne turned toward her father.
âYou said those documents were real.â
Lucien whispered.
âBe quiet.â
May you like
Charlotte heard him.
The conspiracy was beginning to split.
