Chapter 14 - Adrianâs Last Bargain

Adrian was inside Room 1816.
When investigators opened the door, he stood beside the empty shelves holding Eleanorâs ledger.
Charlotte stopped in the corridor.
He had taken it from Danielâs secured office during the gala.
Adrian smiled.
âYou really are your motherâs daughter.â
âPut the ledger down.â
He looked at the book.
âThis destroys more than me.â
âIt destroys judges.â
âInvestors.â
âBoard members.â
âPeople your company still needs.â
Charlotte stepped closer.
âMy company needs employees and guests.â
âIt does not need criminals.â
Adrian laughed.
âThat sounds wonderful in a speech.â
âWait until banks refuse your credit.â
âWait until partners leave.â
âWait until five thousand employees wonder whether your morality is worth their jobs.â
Charlotte looked at him.
âThat was the argument you used on my mother.â
His expression changed.
âYou told her exposing you would destroy Solmere.â
âShe hesitated.â
âSo you stole more.â
Adrian lowered the ledger.
âI built this company beside her.â
âNo.â
âYou worked for her.â
His face hardened.
âYou think ownership makes you competent?â
âNo.â
Charlotte said.
âBut stealing definitely makes you unqualified.â
Officers moved closer.
Adrian suddenly opened the ledger.
He tore out a page.
Then another.
Charlotte did not react.
Adrian looked confused.
âStop me.â
âYou can destroy that copy.â
His hands froze.
Charlotte continued.
âMy mother said to trust the version that couldnât be edited.â
âShe made three paper copies.â
Adrian stared at her.
âOne is with federal investigators.â
âOne is with Daniel.â
âAnd youâre holding the third.â
For the first time, Adrian looked defeated.
Charlotte stepped closer.
âYou spent years thinking everyone around you was too afraid to keep evidence.â
âYou forgot my mother knew exactly who you were.â
Adrianâs shoulders lowered.
Officers took the ledger.
They handcuffed him.
As they led him past Charlotte, he stopped.
âI never meant for Eleanor to die.â
Charlotte looked at him.
âBut you meant to drug her.â
Silence.
âYou meant to silence her.â
Silence.
âYou meant to steal her company.â
Adrian looked away.
Charlotteâs voice became quiet.
âIntentions donât erase consequences.â
He was taken toward the elevator.
Charlotte entered Room 1816 alone.

She stood where her mother had hidden the ledger.
Only then did she cry.
