Chapter 2 - The Owner Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

Within ten minutes, the Solmere Hotel had become a fortress.
Daniel ordered hotel security to close the executive floor.
The independent auditors secured the financial office.
Charlotte instructed staff not to delete a single email, camera recording, invoice, or access log.
Vivienne stood beside the concierge desk in stunned silence.
Then the executive elevator opened.
Adrian Mercer stepped out.
At fifty-two, Adrian had spent fifteen years as Eleanor Valeâs chief operating officer.
After Eleanorâs death, he became interim chief executive of Solmere Holdings.
He had also spent the last four months telling the board that Charlotte was emotionally unstable and possibly missing.
Now she was standing in front of him.
His expression barely changed.
âCharlotte.â
She watched him carefully.
âYou donât look surprised.â
Adrian smiled.
âI always hoped you would come home.â
âThat isnât what your board reports say.â
A shadow moved behind his eyes.
Vivienne hurried toward him.
âAdrian, she says she owns the hotel.â
âShe does.â
Vivienne stopped.
Adrian continued.
âAt least technically.â
Charlotte almost laughed.
âThere it is.â
Daniel stepped beside her.
âWhat exactly does technically mean?â
Adrian adjusted his cuffs.
âIt means ownership and operational control are not the same thing.â
He explained that after Eleanorâs sudden death, Solmereâs emergency succession committee had suspended Charlotteâs voting authority.
The board claimed Charlotte had become unreachable.
Then medical records appeared suggesting she had suffered a severe psychological breakdown after her motherâs death.
Charlotte stared at him.
âYou declared me incompetent without ever speaking to me.â
âThe board acted to protect the company.â
âFrom its owner?â
âFrom instability.â
Charlotte took another step.
âWhose doctor signed the report?â
Adrian hesitated.
Daniel noticed.
âAnswer her.â
âDr. Malcolm Price.â
Charlotte smiled for the first time.
Adrianâs expression tightened.
âWhat?â
âMalcolm Price lost his medical license eleven months before he supposedly examined me.â
The lobby erupted in whispers.
Adrianâs face hardened.
Charlotte continued.
âAnd I have never met him.â
Vivienne looked at Adrian.
âYou told me she was unstable.â
Charlotte turned.
âSo you did know who I was.â
Vivienne realized what she had admitted.
âI knew a woman named Charlotte Vale existed.â
âThat isnât what I asked.â
Charlotte looked toward the ceiling.
A security camera pointed directly at the lobby.
âFortunately, we can review everything you said before you started dragging me.â
Vivienneâs confidence finally cracked.
Adrian stepped forward.
âCharlotte, this is becoming unnecessarily theatrical.â
She stared at him.
âYou forged medical records.â
âMy mother died.â
âMy voting rights disappeared.â
âAnd forty-three million dollars left Solmere accounts.â
She lowered her voice.
âI think we passed theatrical several felonies ago.â
Daniel handed Adrian a formal notice.
âEffective immediately, all executive financial authority is frozen pending an emergency ownership review.â
Adrian read the first page.
âYou cannot do this.â
Charlotte answered.
âI just did.â
His eyes lifted to hers.
For the first time, there was no polite executive mask.
Only anger.
Then he said something that confirmed Charlotteâs worst fear.
âYour mother should have explained how dangerous this company could become.â
Charlotte went still.
Adrian realized his mistake.
Daniel looked sharply at him.
Charlotte spoke quietly.
âShe tried.â
She reached into her pocket.
May you like
âShe left me a message twelve hours before she died.â
Adrianâs face lost its color.
