Chapter 3 - Eleanorâs Last Message

Charlotte had listened to her motherâs final voicemail more than a hundred times.
She still hated hearing the fear in Eleanorâs voice.
Daniel took Charlotte into a private conference room behind the lobby.
Adrian was allowed inside only with counsel present.
Vivienne was kept outside.
Charlotte placed her phone on the table.
Then she pressed play.
Eleanor Valeâs voice filled the room.
âCharlotte, if you get this, donât call me back.â
There was breathing in the background.
Quick.
Uneven.
âI found something in Solmereâs acquisition accounts.â
âAdrian says itâs restructuring.â
âIt isnât.â
Adrianâs jaw tightened.
The recording continued.
âDo not trust the emergency trust amendment.â
âDo not sign anything from Simon Graves.â
Daniel looked up.
Simon Graves was Solmereâs corporate counsel.
He had been the attorney who presented Charlotteâs alleged medical incapacity paperwork to the board.
Then Eleanor said the line Charlotte had never understood.
âRoom 1816 isnât a room.â
The voicemail ended.
Silence.
Adrian leaned back.
âThat proves nothing.â
Charlotte stared at him.
âMy mother named you.â
âShe said I described the accounts as restructuring.â
âWhich is true.â
âYou also claimed she was confused during her final weeks.â
âShe was under enormous stress.â
Charlotteâs hand curled against the table.
Eleanor had died at fifty-eight.
The official cause was a sudden cerebral hemorrhage.
She collapsed inside the private penthouse suite at the Solmere.
No family member had been with her.
Adrian had been one of the last people to see her alive.
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
âWhat is Room 1816?â
Daniel shook his head.
âThe hotel has seventeen public floors.â
Adrian said nothing.
Charlotte noticed.
âYou know.â
âNo.â
âYou reacted.â
âI reacted because your mother was ill.â
Charlotte stood.
âMy mother was not ill until the night she died.â
Adrianâs attorney interrupted.
âThis conversation is over.â
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
âFine.â
She walked toward the door.
Adrian spoke behind her.
âYou really think ownership means people will suddenly obey you?â
Charlotte stopped.
He continued.
âYour mother had fifty-one percent too.â
Charlotte slowly turned around.
âAnd look what happened to her.â
Daniel stood immediately.
Adrian seemed to realize how the sentence sounded.
Charlotte did not give him time to repair it.
âThank you.â
âFor what?â
âFor reminding me why I came disguised.â
Adrian frowned.
Charlotte explained.
For six weeks, she had been entering Solmere properties under false reservations.
She wore inexpensive clothing.
Used cash.
Spoke with housekeepers instead of executives.
She discovered staff pay had been cut while management bonuses doubled.
Entire suites were being rented without appearing in booking systems.
Luxury goods were delivered after midnight.
Several long-term employees had been fired after asking questions.
And every unusual transaction ultimately led back to one internal code.
1816.
Adrianâs eyes shifted.
Charlotte saw it.
âSo thatâs what my mother meant.â
She opened the door.
â1816 is not a hotel room.â
âItâs an account.â
Adrian did not answer.
May you like
Charlotte smiled faintly.
âNow weâre getting somewhere.â
