Chapter 7 - Adrian Came Home to an Empty House

I moved out of the townhouse before Adrian was allowed back.

Not because he frightened me.

Because I wanted nothing there.

The furniture belonged mostly to him.

The art belonged to his mother.

The wine cellar was Graham’s obsession.

I took my books.

My clothes.

My grandmother’s silver tray.

Three paintings I bought before marriage.

And a blue ceramic bowl Elodie gave me years earlier.

That was all.

Adrian returned to a house full of objects and no wife.

He called me thirty-four times.

Then he sent a message.

WE CAN FIX THIS.

I stared at it.

For years, “fixing” meant I accepted less truth.

Not anymore.

He sent another.

BIANCA IS OVER.

Then.

I MADE A MISTAKE.

Then.

MOM PUSHED TOO FAR.

There it was.

The blame migration.

Bianca.

Genevieve.

Pressure.

Stress.

Everyone except Adrian.

I forwarded the messages to Marisol.

Then one arrived that was different.

YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENS IF GRAHAM’S DEBT COMES OUT.

I replied for the first time.

I understand exactly what happens.

He called immediately.

I answered.

“Isla.”

“What?”

“My father could lose everything.”

“That is unfortunate.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

“He’s family.”

“He is your family.”

“You married into us.”

“And apparently you interpreted that as an acquisition.”

Adrian exhaled.

“This is not a joke.”

“I know.”

“If those debts become public, the Arden name is destroyed.”

“The name will survive.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know your mother has spent years using that name to justify lying.”

Silence.

Then Adrian said something unexpected.

“You think I chose Bianca.”

“Yes.”

“I chose survival.”

I almost laughed.

“For whom?”

“My parents.”

“My sister.”

“Us.”

“No.”

I said.

“You chose the structure that kept everyone comfortable except me.”

He went quiet.

Then he whispered.

“If my father falls, there are people who will come after Elodie too.”

That changed the conversation.

“What does Elodie have to do with this?”

Adrian hesitated.

Too long.

May you like

“Adrian.”

He hung up.
