Chapter 19 - One Year After the Wedding

A year after Elodie’s wedding, she invited me to dinner.

Small restaurant.

No ballroom.

No seating chart.

No family politics.

Marcus was there.

So was Marisol.

Elodie was pregnant.

She handed me an ultrasound photograph.

I cried immediately.

Then she smiled.

“You know the trust letter?”

“Yes.”

“We read it again.”

“You didn’t need to.”

“I know.”

She touched my hand.

“But I wanted you to know we are naming you one of the education trustees.”

I laughed.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Very.”

The baby would never know why that trust existed.

Maybe that was good.

Not every child needed to inherit the story of adult greed.

Some could simply inherit protection.

Later that night, I walked past the old Arden estate.

It had been sold.

The new owners were converting part of it into a boutique hotel.

The ballroom lights were on.

For a moment, I saw that night again.

Bianca in red.

Adrian beside her.

Genevieve smiling.

My place card gone.

Then the memory changed.

I saw myself walking out.

Not abandoned.

Not defeated.

May you like

Leaving.

There was power in remembering accurately.
