Chapter 14 - Graham’s Estate Was Never Safe

Graham’s debts were worse than Priya first estimated.
Eleven million.
Then thirteen.
Then nearly sixteen.
Some loans were secured.
Some private.
Some personally guaranteed.
The estate itself carried multiple liens.
Genevieve had spent years presenting it as old family wealth.
It was mostly borrowed elegance.
The ballroom.
The gardens.
The silver.
The cars.
The wine cellar.
Debt.
I thought about every dinner where she criticized my “new money.”
My company was profitable.
Her lifestyle was financed.
That irony almost made me sad.
Almost.
Then investigators found something else.
Graham had pledged expected future distributions from an Arden family trust as collateral.
Those distributions were much smaller than lenders had been led to believe.
More misrepresentation.
More pressure.
More lies.
Adrian had known some of it.
Not all.
Genevieve had known less.
That created war inside the family.
Graham blamed Adrian for involving company funds.
Adrian blamed Graham for hiding the true debt.
Genevieve blamed Bianca.
Bianca blamed Adrian.
Everyone blamed someone.
Except me.
For the first time, I was no longer carrying the emotional debris.
Then Priya found a transfer dated six months earlier.
$300,000 from my corporate account to Arden Estate Services.
Purpose.
Property preservation.
I had never authorized it.
The money paid overdue property taxes.
Without my company, the estate Genevieve used to humiliate me might already have faced enforcement.
I stared at the ballroom photograph on my phone.
May you like
My mistress-occupied chair had sat inside a house partly saved by money taken from me.
That was the last insult I needed.
