The offshore account held $1.7 million.
Not all mine.
Enough was.
Funds had moved through three companies before arriving there.
Some transactions dated back almost two years.
Adrian had been hiding money long before Bianca became obvious.
The affair had not created the dishonesty.
It simply exposed the person already capable of it.
Marisol contacted authorities.
The civil case widened.
Tax specialists became involved.
Adrian’s lawyer stopped using words like misunderstanding.
Now he used cooperation.
The offshore account created leverage.
Adrian agreed to disclose additional accounts.
One in Switzerland.
Another corporate account in Delaware.
A private investment vehicle I had never seen.
The total hidden or redirected funds crossed four million dollars.
Some belonged to our marital estate.
Some to my company.
Some had already been spent.
The numbers were ugly.
But numbers did something lies could not.
They stayed still.
No family narrative could make four million become zero.
No perfume.
No wedding gown.
No family name.
Then Marisol called.
“Adrian wants a settlement.”
“What kind?”
“He gives up claims to the Toronto condo.”
“He repays what can be traced.”
“He accepts a reduced share of remaining marital assets.”
“And?”
“He cooperates with the financial investigation.”
I stared out my office window.
“Does he admit wrongdoing?”
“In the settlement?”
“Yes.”
Marisol paused.
“He will if that is your condition.”
“It is.”
For years, everyone around Adrian called his behavior mistakes.
Stress.
Confusion.
Family pressure.
I wanted one document that used accurate language.
Unauthorized transfers.
Concealed assets.
Breach of fiduciary duty.
He signed.
That was the day my marriage truly ended.
