Chapter 8 - The Missing Evidence

The stolen access card belonged to Assistant District Attorney Paul Mercer.
He had attended Marcus’s dinner.
Mercer claimed he lost the card two days earlier.
Security footage showed him entering the evidence building at 2:13 a.m.
He wore a cap and kept his face lowered.
But Sophia Lane, the evidence clerk, identified the way he walked.
Mercer had a permanent injury in his left ankle.
He was arrested at his office.
The gold key was not with him.
He admitted Lionel Crane had paid him for information.
He claimed Lionel threatened his family.
He denied taking the key.
Then investigators found a message on his phone.
Delivery complete.
Airport locker 44.
The locker contained the gold chain.
The key was gone.
A flight to Belize had departed twenty minutes earlier.
Passenger records listed a man named Harold Crane.
Lionel’s older brother had used the name, but the photograph belonged to Richard Hale.
Marcus’s supposedly dead father had entered the country two weeks before my rescue.
He had likely been inside the house while I was imprisoned.
My recordings captured a third male voice on two nights.
The man never came close to the cage.
He asked Marcus whether I had signed.
Marcus answered that hunger was making me difficult.
The man said:
Then use the child.
At the time, I assumed he meant Hope.
Now Amelia recognized the voice.
“Richard.”
“He came to the apartment the night before they took me.”
Federal agents tracked the Belize flight.
The passenger changed planes in Miami.
He never boarded the second flight.
Richard remained in the United States.
The key’s data chip contained a remote-access code.
If activated, it could erase financial records across several offshore servers.
The network’s evidence was disappearing.
Natalie had already copied my phone recordings to five locations.
Amelia’s records had been secured by federal court order.
But the account ledgers identifying other women were still vulnerable.
Owen asked whether Marcus ever mentioned a private server.
I remembered the room beside the basement stairs.
Marcus called it the wine vault.
I had never seen him store wine there.
Police returned to the house.
Behind the shelves, they found a biometric safe.
It required Marcus’s handprint.
Marcus refused to cooperate.

Then Hope’s newborn hospital record revealed something unexpected.
Her blood type made Marcus’s paternity medically impossible.
