Chapter 13 - The Empty Cradle

The farmhouse window remained locked.

The back door remained bolted.

Natalie had been downstairs.

I had been asleep beside the cradle.

No one had entered through the house.

Then Owen found a loose floorboard beneath the kitchen rug.

A tunnel led from the root cellar to an abandoned well outside the fence.

Our grandmother had used it during Prohibition.

Richard had known the Bennett family longer than we realized.

A small camera inside the cradle had released a sleeping gas.

I had believed my exhaustion came from recovery.

Natalie found the device hidden beneath the mattress.

Marcus’s photograph showed Hope wrapped in her yellow blanket.

A clock behind him displayed the correct time.

She was alive.

Lionel called.

“Complete the board transfer.”

“Then the child is returned.”

“I want to hear her.”

A faint cry came through the phone.

My knees weakened.

Natalie held me upright.

“Where are you?”

“Closer than you think.”

The call ended.

Owen studied the photograph.

The clock was reflected in a metal surface.

Behind Marcus stood industrial pipes painted green.

Bennett Agricultural operated twelve facilities.

Only one used that color coding.

The original seed-processing plant my father built.

The same facility where my father died in a machinery accident.

The plant had been closed for four years.

Richard had chosen a place connected to my grief.

We approached without sirens.

The main building appeared empty.

A heat sensor showed several people beneath the processing floor.

Owen entered through the loading bay.

Natalie and I remained in the command vehicle.

That was the plan.

Then Lionel called again.

“Claire enters alone.”

“Or Marcus leaves with the child through the western tunnel.”

The police did not know about a western tunnel.

I did.

My father used it to reach the river pumps.

I took Owen’s spare body camera.

Natalie grabbed my arm.

“You cannot keep walking into rooms where men hold all the weapons.”

“I am not walking in alone.”

I touched the phone inside my pocket.

Every survivor from the Hale network was connected to the live recording.

Amelia.

Rosa.

The other women.

If I disappeared, the evidence would release automatically.

I entered through the western tunnel.

Marcus waited beside the old machinery.

Hope rested in his arms.

Richard Hale stood behind him with a silver-headed cane.
