Chapter 19 - Richard’s Final Message

Three weeks after Hope’s birthday, a package arrived without postage.

Security cameras showed no delivery vehicle.

The box contained one rotten apple.

Natalie wanted the property evacuated.

Owen called the bomb squad.

No explosive was found.

Inside the apple, technicians discovered a memory card.

A video showed Richard seated inside a bright room overlooking the sea.

Victoria stood behind him.

“My son failed because he confused cruelty with discipline,” Richard said.

“He wanted Claire afraid.”

“Fear becomes unpredictable.”

“I prefer consent.”

He lifted a folder.

The Bennett board transfer carried my electronic signature.

The signature was authentic.

I had approved a routine insurance renewal six years earlier.

Lionel copied the encrypted signature token and attached it to the transfer.

Richard claimed he already controlled twelve percent of Bennett Agricultural through hidden companies.

He did not need Hope’s entire trust anymore.

He needed one final board vote.

A major acquisition was scheduled the following month.

If approved, the hidden companies would gain access to the agricultural patents my father protected.

Richard wanted seed technology capable of surviving severe drought.

In the hands of legitimate farmers, it could prevent famine.

In the hands of a private monopoly, it could control food supplies.

The video continued.

“Claire, you believe the cage was the crime.”

“It was only an impatient method.”

“The real cage is ownership.”

The screen changed.

A board member appeared entering a hotel in Barcelona.

Thomas Reed.

My father’s oldest business partner.

Thomas had supported every reform after my rescue.

He had encouraged me to take medical leave.

He had offered to manage the company temporarily.

Richard had reached him.

Owen examined the board records.

Thomas controlled the deciding vote.

We called him.

He denied traveling to Barcelona.

The hotel footage showed otherwise.

Then he stopped answering.

The acquisition vote was forty-eight hours away.

Richard had survived the river.

He was no longer hiding.

He was moving toward the company my father died protecting.

I looked at Hope playing on the floor beside Natalie.

Marcus tried to gain power by putting me inside a cage.

Richard expected me to surrender because I had escaped one.

He had misunderstood what the cage taught me.

Locks worked only while the person inside believed nobody could hear her.

This time, the entire world was listening.
