Chapter 7 - Evelyn’s Gold Key

Evelyn requested a private meeting with me.
Her attorney said she possessed information about Lionel Crane.
Owen advised me not to go.
I agreed only because the meeting would be recorded and conducted behind glass.
Evelyn entered wearing a county uniform.
Without her jewelry, she looked almost ordinary.
I remembered her standing outside the cage each morning.
The gold key touching her chest.
“Where is Lionel?” I asked.
“You named the child Hope.”
“Yes.”
“Marcus will hate that.”
“I did not come to discuss what Marcus likes.”
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“You sound stronger now.”
“I was strong in the cage.”
“You simply had the advantage.”
Her smile disappeared.
She wanted immunity.
Prosecutors had offered nothing.
“I can give you Crane,” she said.
“Then give him to the police.”
“I want protection.”
“From whom?”
“Marcus’s father.”
I had been told Richard Hale died ten years earlier.
The family foundation carried his name.
A portrait of him hung in Marcus’s office.
According to Evelyn, Richard was alive.
He lived under another identity in the Cayman Islands.
He designed the inheritance scheme.
He trained Lionel Crane.
He selected vulnerable women whose assets could be moved through marriages, medical orders, or guardianships.
Marcus believed he would inherit Richard’s entire network after Hope was born.
Evelyn believed the same.
Richard planned to abandon both of them once my company shares transferred.
“Why did you help?”
Evelyn looked through the glass.
“Because I spent thirty years watching men take everything while women begged for portions.”
“So you caged women to gain your portion.”
“I survived.”
“No.”
“You became useful to the person hurting you.”
The truth angered her more than an insult would have.
She leaned closer.
“The gold key opens more than the cage.”
Police had already placed it in evidence.
Inside the decorative handle, technicians discovered a data chip.
It contained account numbers, facility locations, and coded patient names.
The key had been designed to carry the entire network in plain sight.
Evelyn claimed Lionel would attempt to recover it.

That night, someone entered the police evidence facility using a prosecutor’s access card.
The gold key disappeared.
