Chapter 14 - Richard Hale

Richard looked like the portrait from Marcus’s office.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Lionel Crane stood beside a metal table covered with documents.
Dr. Wallace waited near an open medical bag.
The entire network had gathered around one newborn child.
Richard smiled.
“Claire Bennett.”
“You resemble your father.”
“You killed him.”
“Your father’s death was an industrial accident.”
“You knew about the tunnel beneath his plant.”
“I knew many things about Bennett Agricultural.”
My father had discovered Richard’s guardianship network.
He planned to expose several illegal land transfers.
Richard arranged the machinery failure.
Marcus entered my life two years later.
Every major event had been scheduled.
Hope began crying.
Marcus held her awkwardly.
“Give her to me.”
“She is calmer with me.”
“She has never met you.”
“I am her father.”
“You are the reason she was born on a cage floor.”
Richard tapped his cane.
“Enough.”
He pointed toward the transfer documents.
The papers gave Hale Management control of my company.
They also assigned Hope’s guardianship to Marcus if I became medically incapacitated.
Dr. Wallace prepared the medical part of the plan.
Lionel prepared the legal part.
Richard wanted my voice.
I stood before the recorder.
“What happens after I authorize it?”
“You and Marcus reconcile publicly.”
Richard’s expression remained calm.
“You enter a private recovery center.”
“The child remains with her father.”
“And if I refuse?”
Marcus looked at Hope.
That was the threat.
I began reading the authorization.
Lionel relaxed.
Richard watched the recorder.
Marcus smiled.
Then I changed the final sentence.
“I, Claire Bennett, identify Richard Hale, Marcus Hale, Lionel Crane, and Dr. Stephen Wallace as participants in kidnapping, attempted murder, unlawful confinement, and organized theft.”
Richard’s face changed.
Owen’s voice came through the body camera.
“Transmission confirmed.”
Lights flooded the processing floor.
Federal agents entered through three tunnels.
Marcus pressed a gun against Hope’s blanket.
“Everyone back.”
I stopped breathing.
He stared at me.
“You ruined everything.”
“No.”
“I survived it.”
He moved toward the river tunnel.
Richard did not help his son.
He stepped toward a hidden exit.
May you like
Lionel followed.
The network abandoned Marcus the moment he stopped being useful.
