Chapter 16 - Starting Over
Nathan gave up the mansion.
He sold what could be sold.
He returned what had been stolen.
He created compensation funds for former employees harmed by his father's actions.
People called him foolish.
He didn't care.
He started a smaller company.
This time, every contract was transparent.
Every employee had a voice.
Every decision had oversight.
Grace returned to school.
Nathan encouraged her.
“You don't have to be a maid anymore.”
Grace smiled.
“I know.”
“But I liked working.”
“I know.”
“I want to choose what I do next.”
Nathan nodded.
“Then choose.”
Grace eventually opened a childcare center.
She named it Lily's House.
It helped single mothers who were struggling to survive.
Nathan became her first major donor.
But he never controlled it.
It was hers.
One evening, Lily ran through the new center.
Nathan watched her laugh.
Grace stood beside him.
“You're staring.”
“I missed a lot.”
“You're making up for it.”
“I hope so.”
Grace looked at him.
“You are.”
Nathan hesitated.
“Grace.”
“Yes?”
“I loved you before.”
She smiled sadly.
“I know.”
“But I don't expect you to love me again.”
Grace looked at him for a long moment.
“Good.”
Nathan laughed softly.
“Good?”
“You'll have to earn it.”
He nodded.
