CHAPTER 9 The Secret Beneath The Family Name

Clara stared at the envelope.
Her hands were shaking before she even touched it.
She knew that handwriting.
Not because she had seen it many times.
Because she had spent years trying to forget it.
Julian.
Slowly, she opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
Not a document.
Not a threat.
A memory.
The picture showed a young woman standing in front of Vale Estate.
Clara.
Six years younger.
Before the marriage.
Before the expensive dresses.
Before the carefully rehearsed smiles.
Before she learned how to read Julian’s footsteps from another room.
On the back of the photograph were five words:
You were chosen for a reason.
Clara’s breathing stopped.
A thousand thoughts rushed through her mind.
Chosen?
What did that mean?
She had always believed she met Julian by chance.
A charity event.
A conversation.
A charming man who knew exactly what to say.
A man who seemed interested in her dreams.
But now…
She wasn’t sure anything had been accidental.
A floorboard creaked outside.
Clara quickly hid the photograph beneath the blanket.
The door opened.
Julian stood there.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he smiled.
A small, controlled smile.
The one he used when pretending everything was normal.
“How are you feeling?”
Clara looked at him carefully.
“Better.”
“Good.”
He stepped inside.
Too calmly.
That was what frightened her.
Not anger.
Not shouting.
Calmness.
Julian closed the door behind him.
“You’ve caused a lot of confusion tonight.”
Clara said nothing.
“I know you’re upset.”
Still nothing.
“But we can fix this.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Fix what?”
Julian walked closer.
“Our marriage.”
Clara almost laughed.
Almost.
Because the words sounded ridiculous.
After everything.
After the fear.
After the lies.
“You think this is about a fight?”
Julian stopped.
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“I think someone is poisoning your mind.”
“Someone?”
“Marcus.”
Clara looked at him.
“What about Vanessa?”
The room changed.
Instantly.
Julian’s face lost its calm.
Only for a second.
But Clara saw it.
“You know about her.”
It wasn’t a question.
Julian looked away.
“Who told you?”
Clara smiled sadly.
“That’s what you care about?”
A pause.
“You don’t even deny it.”
Julian stepped closer.
“You don’t understand what happened.”
“Then explain.”
Silence.
The silence was the explanation.
Clara looked at the man she had married.
The man she once defended.
The man she once believed would protect her.
And she finally understood something.
Julian didn’t lie because he was afraid of consequences.
He lied because he believed he had the right to control reality.
Meanwhile, at the old chapel, Eleanor read every page of the documents Vanessa gave her.
The truth became clearer with every line.
Ten years ago, Julian had created a private investment company.
Without her knowledge.
Using family assets.
Using property connected to Vale Estate.
Using signatures that were suspiciously close to hers.
But the most shocking discovery was not the money.
It was the reason.
Julian wasn’t trying to steal the estate.
He was trying to save himself.
“From what?” Eleanor asked.
Vanessa stood near the broken window.
“Debt.”
“How much?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“More than the estate is worth.”
Eleanor looked down.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does if you know Julian.”
A pause.
“He never wanted the estate.”
Eleanor looked up.
“What?”
“He wanted control.”
The words echoed.
Vanessa continued:
“Julian spent his entire life feeling like he was standing in your shadow.”
Eleanor remained silent.
“That’s why he hated the vineyard.”
“Hated?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked outside.
“Because every bottle of wine carried your name.”
Every award.
Every article.
Every success.
Not his.
Yours.
Eleanor felt something painful.
Because deep down…
She knew.
She remembered Julian at twenty-five, standing beside her during a business dinner.
A guest had praised Eleanor.
“She built something incredible.”
Julian had smiled.
But later that night, he said:
“People only respect you because of your father’s name.”
At the time, Eleanor thought it was insecurity.
Now she wondered.
Had it been resentment?
A sound interrupted them.
Footsteps outside the chapel.
Vanessa immediately became alert.
“Someone followed us.”
Eleanor turned.
“Who?”
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“I don’t know.”
The handle slowly moved.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
Eleanor reached for the old iron fireplace tool beside her.
The door opened.
A figure stepped inside.
But it wasn’t Julian.
It wasn’t Marcus.
It was Thomas.
His face was pale.
“Mrs. Vale.”
Eleanor lowered the iron tool.
“What are you doing here?”
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Eleanor.
“I found something.”
“What?”
He held up a small device.
“A hidden recording.”
Eleanor frowned.
“From where?”
Thomas swallowed.
“Your husband’s old office.”
Her heart tightened.
“My husband died eight years ago.”
“I know.”
Thomas looked disturbed.
“But the recording was made three weeks before his death.”
Eleanor stepped closer.
“What does it contain?”
Thomas pressed a button.
A voice came through the speaker.
A voice Eleanor recognized immediately.
Her husband.
“Julian… if you are hearing this, then I failed to stop you.”
Eleanor froze.
The recording continued.
“You need to understand something…”
Static filled the chapel.
Then the voice returned.
“The Vale Estate was never supposed to belong to you.”
Julian’s voice was heard faintly in the background.
Then:
“You are not my son.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because the secret that had haunted Vale Estate for ten years…
Was not about money.
Not about fraud.
May you like
Not about Vanessa.
It was about blood.
