CHAPTER 6 The Stranger At The Gate

The man stood outside in the rain for several seconds without moving.
The security lights reflected against the wet pavement, revealing only pieces of him.
A dark coat.
A tired face.
A scar near his eyebrow.
A man who looked like he had spent years carrying something heavy.
Eleanor watched from the window.
She had seen many people arrive at Vale Estate.
Business partners.
Reporters.
Lawyers.
Friends pretending to be friends.
But this man was different.
He did not look impressed by the mansion.
He did not look intimidated by the security cameras.
He looked like someone who had already lost everything.
And now he had nothing left to fear.
“Who is he?” Eleanor asked.
Clara’s hand tightened around the curtain.
“Marcus Hale.”
The name finally had a face.
Eleanor looked at Julian’s office across the hallway.
The folder.
The payments.
The panic.
Everything connected back to this moment.
“Why is he here?”
Clara shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
But Eleanor noticed something.
Clara was lying.
Not completely.
Not maliciously.
But she was hiding something.
Before Eleanor could question her, Thomas’s voice came through the security system.
“Mrs. Vale, he’s asking to speak with you.”
“Did he say why?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Thomas sounded uneasy.
“He said he has proof that Julian tried to destroy someone’s life.”
The room went silent.
Julian appeared at the end of the hallway.
Everyone turned.
Eleanor immediately noticed the change in him.
His face was pale.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Terrified.
“You need to send him away,” Julian said.
The certainty in his voice was almost more revealing than fear.
Eleanor slowly turned.
“Why?”
“Because he’s dangerous.”
“Dangerous?”
“Yes.”
Julian stepped closer.
“He’s unstable.”
Clara looked at him.
“You said you didn’t know him.”
Julian stopped.
A mistake.
A small one.
But enough.
Eleanor saw it.
“So you do know him.”
Julian looked away.
“Years ago.”
“How many years?”
“Mother—”
“How many?”
Julian clenched his jaw.
“Ten.”
Marcus Hale had entered their lives ten years ago.
And Julian had never mentioned him.
That alone was a problem.
“Thomas,” Eleanor said.
“Yes?”
“Let him in.”
Julian immediately stepped forward.
“No.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“You don’t give orders here.”
The sentence hit harder than she expected.
Because it was not about the estate.
It was about control.
Julian had spent years believing he owned every conversation.
Every room.
Every person.
But tonight, for the first time, he was losing control.
Five minutes later, Marcus Hale entered the library.
Water dripped from his coat onto the wooden floor.
Thomas closed the door behind him.
Marcus looked around the room.
His eyes stopped at Eleanor.
“Mrs. Vale.”
His voice was deeper than she expected.
“You look exactly like your father.”
Eleanor frowned.
“You knew my father?”
Marcus gave a humorless smile.
“I knew your family better than I wanted to.”
Julian stood near the fireplace.
“Leave.”
Marcus looked at him.
And smiled.
A smile without warmth.
“You still talk like you own everything.”
Julian’s face hardened.
“Don’t do this.”
“Do what?”
“Tell lies.”
Marcus laughed softly.
“Lies?”
He reached into his coat.
Everyone became alert.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Not a weapon.
A document.
“I spent ten years trying to expose you.”
He placed it on the table.
“Tonight, you finally made it easy.”
Eleanor looked at the envelope.
“What is this?”
Marcus looked at Julian.
“Ask your son.”
Nobody spoke.
Eleanor opened the envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Bank records.
Documents.
And one image that made her blood run cold.
A younger Julian.
Standing beside Marcus.
And between them…
A woman Eleanor had never seen before.
The date was printed beneath the photograph.
Ten years earlier.
“What am I looking at?” Eleanor asked.
May you like
Marcus answered quietly.
“The beginning of Julian Vale’s biggest lie.”
