CHAPTER 20 The Secret That Was Never Buried

Eleanor stared at the photograph.
She forgot how to breathe.
The image was old.
The edges were damaged.
The colors had faded with time.
But the face was unmistakable.
Her face.
A younger Eleanor.
Standing beside a baby.
A baby wrapped in a white blanket.
A baby she had never seen before.
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
“No…”
Julian looked at her.
“What is it?”
She didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
Because the photograph wasn’t just a picture.
It was a question.
A question that reached deeper than Vale Estate.
Deeper than Victor.
Deeper than every secret they had uncovered.
“Eleanor?”
Richard stepped closer.
“What happened?”
She slowly handed him the phone.
The moment he saw the image…
His expression changed.
And that was when Eleanor knew.
He recognized it.
“You knew.”
Richard looked away.
“I was afraid this would happen.”
The words felt like another betrayal.
“Another secret?”
His eyes closed.
“Yes.”
The room around them disappeared.
Years of marriage.
Years of trust.
Years of believing she knew the man beside her.
All of it was collapsing piece by piece.
“Who is that baby?”
Nobody answered.
Eleanor looked at Margaret.
Then Thomas.
Then Richard.
Finally Julian.
And Julian looked just as confused as she was.
“I don’t know.”
For once, she believed him.
They returned to the old house.
Everyone gathered around the table.
The photograph sat in the center.
The final mystery.
Daniel studied it carefully.
“I have never seen this.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“But someone has.”
Richard remained silent.
She turned toward him.
“Tell me.”
He looked older than he had moments before.
“I wanted to protect you.”
“Stop saying that.”
Her voice was firm.
“Everyone says they are protecting me while they destroy my ability to choose.”
The room went silent.
Richard lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.”
A long pause.
“The child was found thirty-four years ago.”
Eleanor froze.
“Thirty-four?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
Richard looked at her.
“The same year Julian was born.”
Julian immediately looked up.
“What?”
Richard continued:
“There was a fire at an old medical facility outside Napa.”
Eleanor frowned.
“What does that have to do with me?”
Richard looked at the photograph.
“Everything.”
Thirty-four years earlier.
Before Julian.
Before Clara.
Before the secrets.
Eleanor had been a young woman.
Ambitious.
Determined.
Working to prove herself in a family that constantly underestimated her.
That was the version of herself she remembered.
But apparently…
There was another story.
One nobody told her.
“One night,” Richard said, “you helped someone.”
“Who?”
“A woman named Anna.”
The name sounded unfamiliar.
“She was connected to the Cross family.”
Eleanor stared.
“Why don’t I remember her?”
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“Because Victor made sure you forgot.”
A cold feeling moved through her.
“What did he do?”
“He gave you a choice.”
“What choice?”
Richard looked at her.
“The estate…”
A pause.
“Or the child.”
The room went silent.
Eleanor’s face went pale.
“That’s impossible.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at the photograph.
“That child was not supposed to survive.”
Everyone looked toward Alexander.
Eleanor whispered:
“Alexander?”
Richard nodded.
“He was born the same night Julian was.”
Nobody spoke.
The impossible truth began forming.
Alexander was not just another heir.
Not just Victor’s secret.
He was connected to Eleanor’s forgotten past.
But how?
“Why was I holding him?” Eleanor asked.
Richard answered:
“Because Anna trusted you.”
“Why?”
“Because you were the only person who refused to follow Victor’s orders.”
Eleanor looked confused.
“I don’t remember.”
“I know.”
Richard’s expression became painful.
“Because Victor had people erase parts of the story.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Erase?”
Richard nodded.
“Records disappeared.”
“Witnesses disappeared.”
“Memories were manipulated.”
The room felt colder.
Because the enemy was no longer one person.
It was a system.
A machine built over decades.
Then Alexander spoke.
Everyone turned.
The boy had been quietly listening.
“I know her.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“What?”
Alexander touched the photograph.
“My mother had this picture.”
The room froze.
“Your mother?”
He nodded.
“She told me the woman in the picture saved my life.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“Your mother said that?”
“Yes.”
Alexander looked at her.
“She said one day I would meet her again.”
A pause.
“She said she was my real family.”
Outside, thunder rolled across the valley.
The storm returned.
But this time, Eleanor was no longer searching for the truth.
The truth had found her.
Then Thomas’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?”
A pause.
“Are you sure?”
He slowly lowered the phone.
Eleanor immediately knew.
“What happened?”
Thomas looked toward the window.
“Someone broke into the Vale archives.”
“Who?”
Thomas swallowed.
“They didn’t steal anything.”
A pause.
“They left something.”
“What?”
Thomas opened his hand.
Inside was a small envelope.
On the front was written:
FOR ELEANOR VALE.
She opened it.
Inside was one final message.
Only one sentence.
You found the child.
Now find the mother.
Eleanor looked up.
“Anna.”
Richard went pale.
Because he knew what that meant.
Anna wasn’t dead.
She had been waiting.
Watching.
And somewhere in Napa Valley…
The woman who knew the first secret of the Vale family…
May you like
Was still alive.
