CHAPTER 14 The Guest Who Was Never Invited

The alarm continued screaming through the estate.
Red emergency lights flashed along the hallway walls, turning the old mansion into something unfamiliar.
A place that had once represented security.
Now it felt like a trap.
Eleanor stood in the dark library beside Clara, both of them listening to the sound of footsteps somewhere above.
Slow.
Calm.
Unhurried.
Whoever had entered the house was not afraid.
That was the most disturbing part.
Thomas’s voice came through the security system again.
“Mrs. Vale, stay where you are.”
Eleanor pressed the intercom button.
“Where is Julian?”
A pause.
“His room is empty.”
The answer changed everything.
Clara looked at Eleanor.
“He’s gone?”
Eleanor didn’t answer.
Because she was thinking the same thing.
Was Julian running?
Or was he preparing?
The footsteps moved closer.
One hallway.
Then another.
Finally, they stopped outside the library door.
Clara instinctively stepped back.
Eleanor noticed.
She placed a hand gently on Clara’s shoulder.
This time, Clara didn’t pull away.
Not from fear.
From trust.
The door handle turned.
Slowly.
The door opened.
And the person standing there was not a stranger.
It was someone they knew.
Someone who had been inside Vale Estate many times.
Someone Eleanor had trusted.
“Thomas?”
The old manager stood in the doorway.
But something was wrong.
His expression was different.
Not fear.
Not concern.
Guilt.
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
“Thomas.”
He lowered his head.
“Mrs. Vale.”
The silence that followed was painful.
“How did you get in?”
Thomas looked at the floor.
“I have access.”
“You said someone had a key.”
“Yes.”
“Whose key?”
Thomas didn’t answer.
That was when Eleanor understood.
The key wasn’t for the door.
It was for the truth.
“You lied to me.”
Eleanor’s voice was quiet.
Thomas looked devastated.
“I protected this family.”
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“You protected secrets.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I was trying to prevent something worse.”
“Worse than what?”
He didn’t answer.
And Eleanor finally lost patience.
“Twenty-two years, Thomas.”
Her voice cracked slightly.
“Twenty-two years I trusted you.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Thomas looked at Clara.
Then at Eleanor.
And finally whispered:
“Julian was never the only person involved.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Thomas shook his head.
“You don’t.”
A chill moved through the room.
“Then who?”
Thomas reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old envelope.
“I found this hidden in your father-in-law’s private archive.”
Eleanor took it.
The paper was aged.
The seal was broken.
Inside was a letter.
She read the first line.
To my successor.
Her stomach tightened.
The letter was not addressed to Julian.
It was not addressed to her husband.
It was addressed to someone else.
Someone unknown.
Someone who had inherited Victor Vale’s secrets.
Eleanor continued reading.
Then her face changed.
“What is it?” Clara asked.
Eleanor didn’t respond.
She couldn’t.
Because the letter contained one sentence that changed everything.
Julian is only the distraction. The real heir will arrive when the estate is ready.
At that exact moment, Julian stood outside the old vineyard storage building.
Alone.
Waiting.
A black vehicle stopped beside him.
The passenger door opened.
Julian looked inside.
“You’re late.”
A voice answered from the darkness.
“No.”
A pause.
“I came exactly when I was supposed to.”
Julian looked tense.
“You promised this would end tonight.”
The person inside laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“You think this was about the estate.”
Silence.
“It was never about the estate.”
Julian’s expression changed.
“Then what was it about?”
The person stepped out.
A woman.
Elegant.
Confident.
Someone Eleanor had never met.
Someone Julian clearly knew.
The woman looked toward the mansion.
“The Vale family.”
She smiled.
“More specifically…”
A pause.
“The child who was hidden from it.”
Julian’s face went pale.
“You said that secret would stay buried.”
The woman looked at him.
“Secrets only stay buried when everyone agrees to keep digging.”
Inside the mansion, Eleanor finished reading the letter.
Her hands were cold.
The final page contained a name.
The name of the person Victor Vale had chosen.
The person who was supposed to inherit everything.
Not Julian.
Not Eleanor.
Not Clara.
Someone else.
Someone connected to the family.
Someone who had been erased from every record.
Thomas looked at her.
“Mrs. Vale…”
She slowly lifted her eyes.
“Who is this?”
Thomas swallowed.
“I don’t know.”
“You knew enough to hide it.”
“I was ordered.”
“By whom?”
Thomas remained silent.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“By whom, Thomas?”
His voice became almost a whisper.
“By your husband.”
Eleanor froze.
Again.
Her late husband.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
But before she could speak—
A sound came from the hallway.
A child’s voice.
Quiet.
Afraid.
Everyone turned.
Because nobody had heard a child inside Vale Estate for years.
“Is anyone there?”
Eleanor slowly walked toward the door.
The voice came again.
“Please…”
A pause.
“I’m looking for my family.”
The hallway was empty.
Except for one thing.
A small suitcase sitting on the floor.
And attached to the handle was a name tag.
Eleanor picked it up.
Her heart stopped.
May you like
Because the name written there was:
Alexander Vale.
