CHAPTER 13 The Name Written In The Shadows

Eleanor stared at the name.

For several seconds, her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

The paper trembled slightly between her fingers.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was trying to understand how a dead person could still be controlling the living.

The name written at the bottom of the document was:

Victor Vale.

Her father-in-law.

Julian’s grandfather.

A man who had died fifteen years earlier.

A man everyone believed had left behind only memories.

And yet his name was sitting inside a secret plan that was still moving.

Still breathing.

Still destroying lives.

“No…”

Eleanor whispered.

She sat down slowly.

Victor Vale had been a powerful man.

Cold.

Brilliant.

Unforgiving.

When Eleanor first married into the family, he never welcomed her.

He tested her.

Every conversation felt like an examination.

Every mistake became evidence that she didn’t belong.

But he respected one thing.

Strength.

And Eleanor had always believed that after his death, his influence ended.

She had been wrong.

The door opened.

Julian walked in.

Eleanor immediately covered the document.

But he noticed.

He always noticed.

“What did you find?”

She looked at him.

A different question entered her mind.

Not:

What did Julian do?

But:

How much of Julian was his own choice?

“Do you know Victor created Project Restoration?”

Julian froze.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

“You know that name.”

Julian looked away.

“Where did you find it?”

Eleanor stood.

“Answer me.”

He remained silent.

That silence was becoming a language.

And Eleanor was finally learning how to read it.

“You knew.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“I knew parts.”

“Parts?”

“Yes.”

“What parts?”

Julian walked toward the desk.

“My grandfather believed the family was weak.”

Eleanor frowned.

“Weak?”

“He thought you were too emotional.”

The insult was almost expected.

“He believed you cared too much about employees. Too much about people.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“And he believed that was a flaw.”

“Yes.”

Julian picked up the document.

“He wanted the estate controlled by someone who would never hesitate.”

“Someone like you.”

Julian looked at the paper.

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

“Then who?”

Julian didn’t respond.

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Julian.”

For the first time, his voice sounded uncertain.

“I don’t know.”

That evening, Marcus met Eleanor in the vineyard.

The sun was setting behind the rows of grapes.

Beautiful.

Peaceful.

A complete contrast to the chaos inside the family.

“You knew about Victor,” Eleanor said.

Marcus looked at the ground.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know who was involved.”

Eleanor studied him.

“You were investigating Julian.”

“I was investigating everyone.”

The answer caught her attention.

“Why?”

Marcus was silent for a moment.

Then:

“Because Vanessa wasn’t the only person Victor destroyed.”

Eleanor turned.

“What do you mean?”

Marcus looked toward the old buildings.

“Your family has been burying secrets for generations.”

A pause.

“And every secret creates another victim.”

Eleanor crossed her arms.

“Who else?”

Marcus hesitated.

Then reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old newspaper clipping.

Eleanor took it.

The headline was faded.

But readable.

LOCAL WOMAN DISAPPEARS AFTER VALE FAMILY DISPUTE

The photo was damaged.

The woman’s face was barely visible.

But Eleanor recognized the name.

Margaret.

Julian’s real mother.

Her heart tightened.

“She didn’t disappear,” Marcus said.

“She was forced to leave.”

Eleanor looked up.

“By Victor?”

Marcus nodded.

“Victor believed she was a threat.”

“A threat?”

“Because she knew the truth about Julian.”

“What truth?”

Marcus looked at her.

“The truth that Julian was never supposed to inherit anything.”

Later that night, Eleanor found Clara sitting alone in the library.

The younger woman looked exhausted.

“You should sleep,” Eleanor said.

Clara smiled faintly.

“So should you.”

Neither of them moved.

Then Eleanor sat beside her.

“I owe you an apology.”

Clara looked surprised.

“For what?”

“For not seeing.”

Clara looked down.

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“No.”

Clara shook her head.

“You were also trapped.”

The words stayed between them.

Because they were true.

Two women.

Different generations.

Different circumstances.

Both manipulated by the same family.

Then Clara reached into her bag.

“I found something else.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“What?”

Clara pulled out a small key.

“Julian’s office.”

“Where did you get this?”

“He gave it to me.”

Eleanor frowned.

“Why?”

Clara’s expression changed.

“Because I think he’s scared.”

“Of what?”

Clara placed the key on the table.

“He told me something before you came home.”

“What?”

Her voice dropped.

“He said…”

A pause.

“He said he wasn’t the person we should be afraid of.”

Eleanor looked at the key.

“What did he mean?”

Clara whispered:

“He said there is someone else controlling everything.”

Before Eleanor could respond—

The lights in the library went out.

A second later…

The security alarm started.

Thomas’s voice came through the speaker.

“Mrs. Vale…”

His breathing was fast.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“Someone entered the estate.”

“Who?”

Silence.

Then Thomas answered:

“Someone who has a key.”

Eleanor looked at the small key on the table.

Because the impossible realization came instantly.

The intruder wasn’t breaking in.

They were invited.
