Chapter 6 — The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The letter felt heavier than paper.
My hands trembled as I held it beneath the soft kitchen lights.
For six years, I had entered this room every morning before sunrise. I had prepared coffee for Eleanor. I had arranged flowers for dinner parties. I had watched powerful people laugh, lie, and pretend.
But never once did I imagine that one day I would stand there holding a message from a woman who believed she might not survive.
I unfolded the letter completely.
And I began to read.
"Clara,
If you are reading this, then something has happened that I could not prevent.
I know what people will say about you.
They will say you were the easiest person to blame.
They will say you had access to every room, every secret, every weakness inside this house.
But I know the truth.
You are the only person in this house who never wanted anything from me.
That is why I trusted you."
I stopped.
My eyes burned.
Eleanor had always been kind to me.
But kindness from wealthy people was rare.
Trust was almost impossible.
I continued.
"There are things about Damian that you don't know.
Things I didn't know when I married him.
Years ago, before this company became powerful, Damian was involved in something that destroyed another man's life.
Everyone believed Jonathan Vale ruined himself.
Everyone believed Damian was innocent.
But I found evidence that proved otherwise."
My breathing became shallow.
Jonathan Vale.
The name I had heard only moments ago.
The man connected to Vanessa.
"Damian didn't betray Jonathan because he hated him.
He betrayed him because he was afraid.
Afraid Jonathan knew the truth about the company.
Afraid Jonathan would expose what happened.
And now his daughter has returned."
I lowered the letter.
Vanessa.
Everything suddenly connected.
Her perfect entrance into Damian's life.
Her patience.
Her calculated kindness.
This was never about romance.
It was revenge.
But then I saw the final paragraph.
And my blood turned cold.
"Clara, there is something more dangerous than Vanessa.
Someone who has been protecting Damian's secrets for years.
Someone who knows exactly what happened that night.
The night everything changed."
Below that sentence was a name.
A name I never expected.
Detective Adrian Cole.
I dropped the letter.
The sound echoed through the empty kitchen.
Because suddenly I didn't know who to trust.
Not Vanessa.
Not Damian.
Not even the detective who claimed he wanted justice.
I quickly folded the letter and placed it inside my jacket.
I needed answers.
But before I could leave, I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming from the hallway.
I turned.
Damian stood there.
His expression was unreadable.
"You found it."
My heart stopped.
"How did you know?"
He looked at the envelope.
"Because Eleanor wrote one for me too."
I stared at him.
"She wrote you a letter?"
He nodded.
"But mine was different."
"What did it say?"
Damian looked away.
For the first time, I saw something I never expected from him.
Shame.
"It said if anything happened to her..."
He swallowed.
"...I was the reason."
The words shocked me.
"You?"
Damian closed his eyes.
"I made mistakes."
"That doesn't explain anything."
"No."
He looked at me.
"It explains everything."
An hour later, Vanessa sat alone in her apartment.
The city lights reflected against the glass walls.
She removed her earrings slowly.
The perfect assistant.
The loyal employee.
The innocent woman.
All gone.
Her phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"Is it done?"
A man's voice responded.
"No."
Her expression darkened.
"Why?"
"Because Eleanor survived."
For the first time that night, Vanessa lost control.
She threw the glass in her hand against the wall.
"That wasn't supposed to happen."
The man remained silent.
Then he said:
"There's another problem."
"What?"
"The maid found Eleanor's letter."
Vanessa froze.
"Clara?"
"Yes."
A dangerous smile appeared on Vanessa's face.
"Then Clara has become a problem."
She walked toward the window.
Below her, the city continued moving.
People laughing.
Cars driving.
Lives continuing.
While inside the world of the Whitmore family...
Everything was collapsing.
"Find out what she knows."
The man asked:
"And if she refuses?"
Vanessa looked at her reflection.
Cold.
Determined.
"Then make sure she never gets the chance to tell anyone."
The next morning, Detective Cole received an unexpected package.
No return address.
Inside was a photograph.
An old photograph.
Taken fifteen years ago.
It showed Damian Whitmore.
Jonathan Vale.
And a third person standing between them.
Someone whose identity had been erased from every official record.
On the back of the photo were six words:
"The third man knows everything."
Detective Cole stared at the image.
Because he recognized the person immediately.
And he whispered:
"No..."
The third man was not dead.
May you like
He was alive.
And he was closer to Damian than anyone realized.
