Chapter 5 — The Man Behind The Camera

The screen remained frozen.
A shadow.
A hidden figure.
And one name attached to the recovered footage.
Damian Whitmore.
Detective Adrian Cole stared at the monitor for nearly a full minute.
He had investigated hundreds of cases.
He had seen husbands lie.
Wives betray.
Families destroy themselves over money, power, and revenge.
But this was different.
Because Damian Whitmore had built his entire reputation around control.
A man like him did not leave accidents behind.
He created plans.
And now there was a secret recording inside his own home that he had never mentioned.
The detective leaned back.
"Interesting."
The technician beside him looked nervous.
"Detective?"
"Find out when this backup was created."
The technician typed quickly.
A few seconds later, his face changed.
"Three weeks ago."
"Three weeks?"
"Yes."
Cole looked at the frozen image again.
Three weeks ago.
Before Eleanor fell.
Before anyone knew there would be a crime.
Before anyone needed evidence.
Which meant one thing.
Damian had been expecting something to happen.
The next morning, the entire city knew.
The headline appeared everywhere.
BILLIONAIRE WIFE SURVIVES MYSTERIOUS PENTHOUSE FALL
But the truth behind the headline was more complicated.
Inside the hospital room, Eleanor watched the news silently.
Damian stood near the window.
He had barely slept.
For the first time in years, he looked smaller.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
"You knew something was wrong."
Eleanor's voice broke the silence.
Damian didn't answer.
She looked at him.
"You knew someone was watching us."
Still nothing.
"Damian."
He finally turned.
"I suspected."
Her expression changed.
"Suspected?"
"I received anonymous messages."
She stared at him.
"When?"
"Months ago."
The room became colder.
"And you didn't tell me?"
"I was trying to protect you."
Eleanor laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
"No."
She shook her head.
"You were trying to protect yourself."
Damian looked away.
Because he knew she was right.
He had spent his entire life believing problems could be solved with money, influence, and silence.
But this time, silence almost killed his wife.
Meanwhile, Detective Cole arrived at the hospital.
He carried a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Records.
He placed them on Eleanor's table.
"I need you to explain something."
She looked at the papers.
Her face changed.
Because she recognized them.
"Where did you get these?"
"Your home office."
Damian immediately looked confused.
"What documents?"
Eleanor hesitated.
Then slowly answered:
"My investigation."
The room went silent.
"Investigation into what?" Damian asked.
Eleanor looked at him.
"Into Vanessa."
His expression hardened.
"You investigated her?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Eleanor looked down.
"Because she wasn't the first woman who tried to get close to you."
Damian froze.
"What does that mean?"
"It means Vanessa knew things about our family that she shouldn't have known."
Detective Cole opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
A younger Vanessa.
Standing outside the Whitmore family mansion.
But she wasn't alone.
Beside her was a man.
Damian stared at the picture.
His face changed.
Because he recognized him.
A man from his past.
A man who had disappeared fifteen years earlier.
His former business partner.
The man responsible for the biggest scandal of Damian's career.
Jonathan Vale.
Eleanor whispered:
"Vanessa is his daughter."
The room went silent.
Damian stepped backward.
"No."
"Yes."
"That's impossible."
Eleanor looked at him.
"She didn't enter your life by accident."
Detective Cole closed the folder.
"She entered your life because she wanted to destroy it."
That night, Clara returned to the penthouse with police permission.
She needed to collect her belongings.
But when she entered the kitchen, something caught her attention.
A small envelope.
Hidden beneath the drawer where Eleanor kept her tea.
Clara recognized the handwriting immediately.
It was Eleanor's.
The envelope had only four words written on it.
"For Clara. When I disappear."
Her hands began to shake.
Because Eleanor had prepared this letter before the fall.
Before anyone knew there would be a crime.
Clara opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
One sentence that changed everything.
"The person who saved my life years ago is the same person who may destroy yours today."
Clara stared at the words.
May you like
Because she knew exactly who Eleanor meant.
And the answer terrified her.
